PRESENT PERFECT TENSE SIMPLE PAST TENSE

The present perfect tense is used for situations that began in the past and continue into the present. Some of his college peers have accused him of stealing the code for Facebook

The simple past tense is used to show an action that happened at a specific time in the past. At the age of 12, Zuckerberg created a messaging program named Zucknet

  • We often use time expressions with the simple past tense.
  • We use expressions like never, just, ever when we use the present perfect tense. Have you ever talked to Mark Zuckerberg? Ann has just asked the right question. Freddy has never seen me drunk.

PAST PERFECT TENSE SIMPLE PAST TENSE

The past perfect tense is used to describe one action that happened before another action in the past. A complete sentence is written in two parts:

  1. The past perfect: to refer to the action that happened first or earlier.
  2. The simple past: to refer to the action that happened after or later. I saw that someone had stolen my passport.

The simple past tense is used to show an action that happened at a specific time in the past. At the age of 12, Zuckerberg created a messaging program named Zucknet.

The police found Green driving Joe Lorenzo´s car. He had $500 in his pocket because his boss had paid him just before the police picked him up. He was driving the car because Joe had asked him to get it repaired before he came home from work.

Dr. Lopez said he had blood on his pants because a dog had bitten him. He called the police to report that someone left an injured dog at his pet clinic five minutes after it opened that morning.

He had five diamond rings in his socks. He said he planned to give them to his mother on her birthday and had saved for months to buy them. Packard had just begun working in the garden at the Lorenzo´s house when the police spoke to him.

When you begin the sentence with the adverbs before, after or when , don´t forget to put comma at the end of the first clause. *When he went to the police station, he had already found Bully.

* If the Past Perfect action did occur at a specific time, the Simple Past can be used instead of

the Past Perfect when "before" or "after" is used in the sentence. The words "before" and "after" actually tell you what happens first, so the Past Perfect is optional.

  • In sentences with “when” , we must use the past perfect to show the sequence of events.
