Use your assigned problem to write about the steps used to solve an equation in one
variable.
Metacognition can be described as thinking out loud (thinking about how you are
thinking) as you would explain a problem with your study group. Write out exactly what
you would tell them and show them. Be sure to:
Include a clear statement of the rules you are applying in each step of your
process (in your own words, the way you remember the rules or process, but use
good math vocabulary) [see page 151-152 for examples of good vocabulary
usage].
o You might make statements like “My next step is ….. because…..”
o You might also make statements like “I need to be very careful here
because I don’t want to make an error with….”
Use a two column format, one for the math, one for words you would say as you
are thinking out loud
Use complete sentences, proper punctuation.

Your first draft must be neatly printed and edited by a tutor in the MRC (HBA4a) and
handed in no later than ________________. Please ask the tutor to sign the top of the
first page below your name and date their signature. The draft will be returned to you the
following Monday. Depending on the quality of your draft, you may be assigned another
tutor session in the MRC or a session in the Writing Lab.
Your final draft must be typed, printed and hand in with this sheet and the draft attached.
