Astronomy Picture of the Day: Birthday Reflections, Papers of Astronomy

Purpose:

to remind yourself of the variety of astronomical objects we have encountered this semester
to practice your written communication skills
Basic Instructions:
Go to the Astronomy Picture of the Day website (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/)
At the bottom of the page, select the “calendar”
Starting with 1996, find the picture for your birthday each year up to 2008.
Select your favorite and second favorite picture.
Include all of the information requested as described on the back of this sheet.
Follow the format instructions listed below.
Contact your instructor for clarification if needed.
Format Instructions:
All writing assignments must be typed.
Please use an easily readable font, in a 12 or 14 point size.
There is no specific length requirement as long as you have all of the required information in your
paper.
Check your paper for spelling and grammar errors. Papers with significant mistakes will receive a
lower grade.
Grading Information:
Papers will be graded based on the following factors:
Does the paper follow the format instructions
Does the paper contain spelling or grammar errors
Does the paper flow well and have a logical progression
Does the paper include all of the required points for the selected topic
Does the paper have accurate factual information.

Topic Description:

For this paper, there is only one topic, but you get to choose which images you write about. Make sure that you include all of the following. Basic instructions again: ● Go to the Astronomy Picture of the Day website (http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/) ● At the bottom of the page, select the “calendar” ● Starting with 1996, find the picture for your birthday each year up to 2008. ● Select your favorite and second favorite picture. What your paper should include:

  • State your birthday (the month and day)
  • List the titles for the picture on your birthday for each of the 12 years
  • Tell me which picture of the 12 is your favorite o Give a brief summary of the picture (in your own words) o Explain why you selected this image as your favorite
  • Tell me which picture of the 12 is your 2nd^ favorite o Give a brief summary of the picture (in your own words) o Explain why you selected this image as your 2nd^ favorite Your brief summary of the images should be three to four sentences describing what is in the picture using astronomical terms where necessary. You can use information in the caption but it must be reworded into your own words to show me that you do understand what it says. Your explanation for your selection of each image should be two to three sentences. When explaining why you selected an image, you might what to consider factors such as: the subject (it was a topic that you really liked studying), the content (you learned new and interesting information from the caption), the visual appeal (you really liked the artistic balance of color and shape). You may of course also have additional reasons for choosing an image, these are listed just to give you some ideas.
