In this science fair project, christina stathas investigates which drink contains the most electrolytes to replenish those lost during physical activity. The project includes hypotheses, background information on electrolytes, experiment procedure, and results for the conductivity and ph levels of gatorade, apple juice, orange juice, chocolate milk, and coca-cola.

DEFINITION 2 My hypothesis was If Gatorade, Apple Juice, Orange Juice, Chocolate Milk and Coca-Cola are measured for the amount of electrolytes, than Gatorade will have a lower conductivity because sports drinks are made to replace electrolytes lost, by sweating when exercising. Here is some background information, An Electrolyte is a scientific term for salts, specifically ions. The word electrolyte means that this ion is electrically charged and moves to either a negative or positive electrode. TERM 3
DEFINITION 3 When you exercise heavily, you lose electrolytes in your sweat, particularly sodium and potassium. These electrolytes must be replaced to keep the electrolyte concentrations of your body fluid constant. This is what electrolytes do for us.Electrolytes are important because they are what your cells use to maintain voltages across their cell membrane and to carry electrical impulses across themselves and to other cells. DEFINITION 7 Measuring the pH of each drink Half-fill 5 more wells of the spotting plate with a different drink. Get universal indicator paper Tear off a 2-3 cm piece and dip it in a drink Compare the colour of the paper with the legend provided Record the pH Repeat steps 3-5 times for all 5 drinks TERM 8

TERM 9
DEFINITION 9 I performed 3 trials and got the same results each time. The results for the pH for Orange Juice was 4, Apple Juice 3, Orange Juice 4, Coke 2.5 and Gatorade was 5.From the results, I came to the conclusion that Gatorade had the most electrolytes because it contained the most sodium and potassium. If I had to perform my experiment again, I would have probably tried different drinks like for example homemade fruit shakes so I can see if it would have had a greater amount of electrolytes or less.
