(^) Waldeyer's tonsillar ring is an anatomical term
describing the lymphoid tissue ring located in the pharynx and to the back of the oral cavity. (^) The ring consists of (from superior to inferior):
(^) Pharyngeal tonsil
(^) Tubal tonsil
(^) Palatine tonsils
(^) Lingual tonsils
(^) Surface-
(^) A)Medial surface-
(^) It is covered by stratified squamous epithelium.
(^) It has 12 to 15 crypts
(^) The largest crypts is called intratonsillar cleft.
(^) B)Lateral surface-
(^) It is covered by the sheet of fascia which forms
the capsule of the tonsil. (^) The capsule is an extend upto pharyngobasilar
fascia. (^) It is attached with the pharynx and tongue by
the superior constrictor, styloglossus, palatoglossus and palatopharyngeus. (^) The firm attachment keeps the tonsil in place
during swallowing
(^) Borders-
(^) Anterior borer is related to the palatoglossus
arch with its muscle (^) The posterior border is related to the
palatopharyngeal arch with its muscle
(^) Poles-
(^) The upper pole is related with the soft palate
(^) The lower pole is related with the tongue
(^) Artery supply:
(^) Mainly it is supplied by tonsillar branch of the
facial artery (^) Additional sources-
(^) Ascending palatine branch of facial artery
(^) Dorsal lingual branches of lingual artery
(^) Ascending pharyngeal branches of external
carotid artery (^) The greater palatine branch of maxillary artery
