PSY 3430
WAIS-III Administration and Scoring Instructions
Dr. Steve Barney
1. Administer and Score each subtest as instructed in the directions.
2. Convert each subtest raw score to a scaled score using Table A.1. Find the
appropriate age range. The top table is for the Verbal Subtests (Vocabulary,
Similarities, Arithmetic, Digit Span, Information, Comprehension, L-N
Sequencing). For each subtest, find the raw score down the column and follow
the row over to the right or left side of the table. The first and last column of the
table gives the scaled score (Mean of 10 Standard Deviation of 3).
3. Repeat the same sequence for the Performance subtests (Picture Completion,
Digit Symbol, Block Design, Matrix Reasoning, Picture Arrangement, Symbol
Search, Object Assembly).
4. Record both the raw scores and scaled scores on the score conversion page
5. Add the totals of the scaled scores for all of the columns listed (scores in
parentheses are not to be totaled). Transpose each summed scaled score to the
appropriate row on the Profile Page (follow the arrows). The summed scaled
scores for Verbal, Performance and FSIQ are what we will be dealing with. The
others are indexes or factors in addition to the Verbal, Performance, and Full
Scale IQ. (they are Verbal Comprehension Index, Perceptual Organization Index,
Working Memory, and Processing Speed. Each is comprised of adding certain
subtest scaled scores together).
6. Once sums of scaled scores are calculated, the next step is to determine the IQ
Scores. Turn to Table A.3 to find the Verbal IQ Score. Find the sum of scaled
scores for VIQ in the columns to the left of VIQ. Working from the right to the
left of that row, find the VIQ, the Percentile Rank, and the Confidence Level. For
example if my Verbal Sum of Scaled Scores was 80, I find 80 in the Sum of
Scaled Scores column, determine that my VIQ is 121, my percentile rank is 92,
and if I select a 90% confidence level, I am 90% certain that my true Verbal IQ
falls between 116 and 125 (this is calculated with the SEM…see stats do come in
handy). Record these numbers in the appropriate spaces on the Profile Page.
7. Repeat the above steps for calculating Performance IQ, using Table A.4.
8. Repeat the above steps for calculating Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) using Table A.5
9. IQ Scales have a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15 (VIQ, PIQ, and
FSIQ)
10. Proceed with the interpretation.
