Evan Keller STAT 380 6/9/ This class gave a great introduction to statistics and some of the terminology needed to build a basic understanding. We started the lesson by learning what data is and terms like variables and observational units. It then transitioned into statistical inference and how we use samples to better understand the population. I really enjoyed the in-class exercises because they were relatable with many of them being about UNL. We moved onto descriptive statistics and how we use that information in multiple different ways. There was a good refresher on topics like median and mean that we probably learned in middle school or even earlier. The measures of variability section was also a good refresher on variance and standard deviation. I learned about these topics a few years ago and while I have used them a couple times, it’s always good to relearn them or catch up on them. As these are standard statistical tools, I am glad we covered these for future use in this lecture. I think exercise 7 and 8 were good because they showed multiple ways to use the formulas from standard deviation and variance. The slides from part 2 were also helpful with relearning some plots and charts that I haven’t used before and how to visualize them. I have never used a dot plot in any of my studies, but I understand them now and am ready to use
them in this class. The histogram and scatter plot will also be useful in data collection and interpretation. Overall, this first lecture was a good refresher on many statistic formulas and ideas and sets a good foundation for the rest of this class.
