Theranos’ Corporate Board of Advisors

Ian Gibbons, Chief Biochemist:

Ian Gibbons has spent most of his career working at Stanford conducting biochemical research. After talking with Elizabeth Holmes, he agreed to work at Theranos, convinced the technology being developed had the chance to change the world. Currently, Ian is developing the blood tests themselves and work- ing with other scientists and engineers to implement these tests into Theranos equipment. Due to ongoing infighting, Ian has increasingly been talking to his friends in academia, particularly at Stanford, to assist in his research.

Kent Frankovich, Systems Engineer

Previously working at the JPL, Kent Frankovich is an experienced mechan- ical and systems engineer. Due to his experience at NASA, he also has a basic background in robotics. Now employed at Theranos, Kent has been placed in charge of designing larger Theranos equipment for healthcare providers and labs. He has retained some influential contacts in NASA and other US govern- ment agencies, particularly the Department of Agriculture.

Henry Mosley, Chief Financial Officer

Henry Mosley has managed the finances of multiple tech firms, the most prominent being Intel. After earning a degree at the University of Utah, he moved to California and settled in Silicon Valley. Mosley firmly believes in ethical business management, but also recognizes the need to keep the profit in the green. He trusts Elizabeth’s plan, but has never shown the loyalty that many in the company display towards her. At Theranos, Mosley has been placed in charge of managing company funds, issuing financial reports to investors, and providing oversight over company accounts.

Donald L. Lucas, Venture Capitalist

Donald Lucas is a venture capitalist based in Silicon Valley. He has invested in many success stories over the years, the most famous being Oracle. Due to his experience, he has connections across the venture capitalist world and in Silicon Valley. Lucas sees Elizabeth Holmes as his student, and wants to see Theranos succeed with Elizabeth eventually following in his footsteps. Elizabeth Holmes frequently went to Lucas for advice, but has stopped going recently. Due to his large investment in Theranos, Lucas has a place on the company board.

Michael O’Connell, Mechanical Engineer

Michael O’Connell has worked in Silicon Valley for a number of years, mainly in biotechnology. He was recruited to Theranos to work on the design of test cartridges and other replaceable components of Theranos’ machines. Michael has commented on multiple occasions about the potential use of Ther- anos products in the veterinary field, but Elizabeth Holmes has made her oppo- sition to these ideas clear. In addition to his other ideas, Michael has strongly advocated for taking Theranos public.

Matt Bissel, IT Director

Matt Bissel has worked in IT support for a number of years in Silicon Valley. At Theranos, he is in charge of cybersecurity, acquiring and managing basic technological services for employees, and other IT services. Matt is highly valued by Elizabeth Holmes, but the IT department remains understaffed and underfunded. Many employees are suspicious of Matt, accusing him of spying on them by Elizabeth’s orders. These rumors have neither been confirmed nor denied.

Tony Nugent, Head of Robotics

Tony Nugent has been put in charge of designing the autonomous machin- ery and software inside Theranos devices that will conduct blood tests and other tasks without human supervision. A well-known mechanical engineer, Tony previously has worked at Logitech and has extensive experience designing remotely controlled devices. After being interviewed for a position at Theranos, he took the job because of the interesting problems he would be asked to solve. While he technically has the help of a couple assistants, Tony prefers to work alone, and with little interference.

Ana Arriola, Product Designer

Ana Arriola comes from Apple after helping design the iPhone. Ana has been told by Elizabeth to work on the overall look and “feel” of all Theranos products, particularly the potential house devices. Using this mandate, she is in charge of a vast spectrum of projects across the company, although this control is heavily disputed. She has repeatedly expressed discomfort with the chaotic and byzantine corporate structure of Theranos and is actively pushing for its reform. Ana has discussed her plans with Elizabeth at length, but nothing has come of it.

Justin Maxwell, UI/UX Designer

Justin Maxwell is a former software designer at Apple. A recent recruit to Theranos, Justin is in charge of designing the UI and user experience for all Theranos devices. More than anything, Justin has become frustrated with the inability of the Theranos departments to freely share information amongst each other. He also holds the respect of many of the software designers in the company.

Michael Esquivel, General Counsel

Michael Esquivel is Theranos’ General Counsel, and is in charge of all legal affairs and cases the company is involved in. He also is involved in the writing and creation of contracts with corporate clients. Most of his work nowadays involves enforcing and creating the NDAs signed by all company workers, with the help of the security team (lead by Edgar Paz). His distaste of corporate politics is well known, and he is determined to remain above the constant infighting within the company.

Avie Tevanian, Investor

Avie Tevanian was the former head of software development at Apple. After quitting due to a dispute with Steve Jobs, Avie has invested a modest amount into Theranos and became a board member. He is a strong advocate of cor- porate accountability and social responsibility. He is impressed by Elizabeth’s vision of the future, but wants to see how she operates overall before making a decision about what he thinks about her.

Aaron Moore, Microfluvial Engineer

Aaron Moore is a dropout graduate student from MIT. After listening to Elizabeth’s vision for the future of the healthcare industry, he dropped out of his Ph.D. program to join the company. Aaron is involved with any aspect of the company that involves his discipline, ranging from the enzyme components of the blood tests to the mechanical portion of Theranos’ machines that test blood. Due to this, he is one of the few people beyond Elizabeth that truly understands the state of the company.

Todd Surdey, Head of Marketing

An experienced marketing executive, Todd was originally recruited from the German conglomerate SAP. Now at Theranos, Todd is widely in charge of
