A lab practical quiz for physics 2b students on the use of a multimeter. The quiz covers techniques for taking care during meter connection, proper placement of the meter in the circuit, and measuring current, resistance, and potential difference. Students are required to carry out specific steps in the presence of an instructor or designated examiner and display reading and units for each measurement.

"The Seeing Eye Dog of Electricity" Name:________________ This quiz is to be taken before your regularly scheduled lab day for the week of Nov. 13th. It is late if taken on due date. You may practice anytime. Examiner will look for following techniques… __Taking care during meter connection (power supply at minimum or disconnected). __Turning off meter when finished. No function changes while meter is in circuit. __Proper placement of meter in circuit (voltmeter in parallel with load, ammeter in series with load). __Proper use of meter as ohmmeter (disconnect R from circuit). __Proper position of AC/DC mode switches. CARRY OUT THE FOLLOWING STEPS IN THE PRESENCE OF INSTRUCTOR OR DESIGNATED EXAMINER (Mrs. Shang or Dr. Harris) The symbol "O" will be checked off by examiner when correctly completed.
General… Overrange is indicated by -1 OL or 1 OL on display. Test lead convention (black connects to COM). Set meter to AUTO range. Never change function (V to I, etc) while meter is in circuit.
1. For PD... a) Choose correct function (V- or V~, Vdc or Vac). Connect leads to V/COM input. Connect leads across (in parallel with) load. Use care... touch leads to circuit before connecting them to circuit. b) Polarity...+ terminal of meter closest to + terminal of power supply. 2. For CURRENT... a) Choose correct function (A). Connect leads to mA/COM input. Toggle AC/DC key until correct mode is displayed. b) With power supply disconnected or off, insert meter into circuit (in series with load). In this (ammeter) mode, the meter has a very low internal resistance and can easily be damaged. Use care, know that you are on safe scale; TOUCH leads to circuit before connecting them to circuit. c) Polarity...+ terminal of meter closest to + terminal of power supply. 3. For RESISTANCE... a) Choose correct function (Ω). Disconnect resistor from circuit.). Disconnect resistor from circuit. b) Never attempt to measure the resistance of a battery, or a capacitor. Never measure resistance of a resistor while it is in a circuit. Beeper may sound for low resistances. Lamp Lamp Batteries
