We would first want to express our gratitude to Mrs. Thu Hà, our beloved teacher, for her assistance with these efforts. She was a huge help to us and supported us when times were difficult. The campaign was successful in large part because to her enthusiasm and assistance. We also wish to thank all the teachers that gave us guidance and helped us out. We also wish to express our gratitude to my classmates for their help. We could not have finished this job without their support. We'd like to express our sincere thanks to everyone who stood by us as we worked on this project.
In modern life, with the development of awareness and technology, the popularization and import of culture in the world has never been so simple. However, this also leads to the fact that evils can also be disseminated to us, especially to young people in popular cities like Hanoi, and typically are drugs, specifically marijuana. In recent years, cannabis has been introduced and become popular in the Vietnamese youth community, especially in popular cities such as Hanoi with the name American grass. Along with other drugs, marijuana has become one of the most sought-after drugs among young Vietnamese in Hanoi. Marijuana use increases the risk of psychosis, including psychotic symptoms, depression, anxiety, and addiction. Observing the popularity and drawbacks this drug brings to the youth, especially in Hanoi, our group wants to explore the consumption of cannabis to understand more, and also raise more awareness about the effects of cannabis to the youth from the perspective of NEU students. 1.2 RESEARCH OBJECTIVE Find out the actual situation of cannabis addiction in Hanoi’s youth. Find out the amount of cannabis consumption in Hanoi. Find out the disadvantages of cannabis and get some solutions. 1.3 RESEARCH QUESTIONS What is the actual situation of using cannabis among Hanoi people? What is the disadvantage of consuming cannabis? What is the solutions to solve the problem of cannabis addiction? 1.4 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Primary data +) A survey of Q&A about the disadvantages and the actual situation of using cannabis with young people in Hanoi. Group members will collect, record video, analyze, synthesize the data from the Q&A. Finally, giving the results. Secondary data +) Find information of using cannabis among Hanoian youth on the internet.
+) Collect data from sources ( Newspapers, reports, researches,…) CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1 DEFINITION 2.1.1 WHAT IS CANNABIS? First of all, it is necessary to immediately confirm that marijuana is a drug derived from the hemp plant called Cannabis Sativa. According to website DEPARTMENT OF HIV AIDS in 2023, currently among young Vietnamese people using different names for the same cannabis derived from the Cannabis Sativa plant such as “bồ đà”, “cỏ”, “bu” are used in the form of smoke, vape (the smoking style of an electronic cigarette), snuff, drink, or eat for personal gratification and entertainment. 2.1.2 WHY IS CANNABIS AN OPIATE? Based on an article on VUSTA in 2021, in recent years, cannabis has been introduced and become popular in the Vietnamese youth community, especially in popular cities such as Hanoi with the name American grass. Satisfied with the pleasures that cannabis brings, its users gradually lose control of their behavior and become dependent on this drug. 2.1.3 MAIN ADDICTIVE INGREDIENT OF CANNABIS The main addictive ingredient of marijuana is THC, which is found in the leaves and flowering parts of the cannabis plant. THC when entering the body will stimulate the brain to release dopamine (happy hormone) creating a feeling of pleasure and lightheadedness for users. Along with other drugs, marijuana has become one of the most sought-after drugs among young Vietnamese in Hanoi. It is not difficult to see young people smoking marijuana as openly as simply smoking a cigarette. Cannabis is gradually becoming one of the ways young people choose to express themselves, from college to university students. Moreover, Marijuana use increases the risk of psychosis, including psychotic symptoms, depression, anxiety, and addiction. Unfortunately, the majority of young people in Hanoi do not understand correctly or enough about the harmful effects of marijuana, especially when used at the same time with many other drugs. Adolescent marijuana exposure increases the likelihood of using another drug (eg, heroin) when given the opportunity - this is why cannabis (like tobacco, alcohol) is called a drug gateway drug. As a research on website HEALTH AND LIFE in 2019, up to 30% of people who
contribute to the healthy development and function of the brain. Marijuana over-activates the part of the brain that contains most of these receptors. This leads to excitement. Short-Term Effects Other effects include: -Hallucinations (when taken at large doses) -Impaired memory -Altered perceptions (such as seeing more vibrant hues) -Altered sense of time -Shifts in emotions -Affected physical activity -Difficulty concentrating and problem-solving -Mental illness (risk is highest with daily consumption of excessive potency marijuana) Long-Term Effects Cannabis may have an impact on brain growth. The way the brain connects regions required for thinking, memory, and learning alters when marijuana use first begins in adolescence. The duration of cannabis' effects and whether some alterations may be permanent are still being studied. For instance, a New Zealand study led in part by Duke University researchers revealed that individuals with chronic cannabis use disorder who began smoking heavily as teenagers saw their IQs decline on average by 8 points between the ages of 13 and 38. Adult marijuana smokers who stop using the drug do not completely regain their lost mental faculties. Adult marijuana smokers didn't exhibit any discernible IQ reduction. In a different recent research of twins, those who smoked marijuana in adolescence and early adulthood experienced significant reductions in language and general knowledge (equal to 4 IQ points), but not in any other cognitive domains. When comparing identical twins, one of whom smoked marijuana and the other did not, significant differences were discovered. This shows that factors other than marijuana, including genetics or the environment in which a person grows up, may be to blame for the IQ reduction among marijuana users. NIDA's Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) study is tracking a sizable cohort of young Americans from late infancy through early adulthood to better understand how and to what extent marijuana and other drugs affect teenage brain development.
Marijuana use may have a wide range of effects, both physical and mental. Physical Effects
1.2 The ways in which young people know about cannabis. Social Media School Friends News 0.00% 10.00% 20.00% 30.00% 40.00% 50.00% 60.00% 70.00% 80.00% 70.20% 29.80% 44.70% 53.20%
The ways in which young people know about canabis Figure 2. The ways in which young people know about cannabis According to the graph above, 70% of the students know about cannabis via social media. Clearly, with the convenience of uploading anything on the internet, it is not difficult to see and get to know this drug. Moreover, 53% of the youngsters got introduced to cannabis through the news, and 45% of the people know it from their friends. Lastly, many schools also teach students about drugs, including cannabis.
1.3 Percentage of young people who know cannabis is illegal in Vietnam Yes 77% No 23%
Yes No Figure 3. Percentage of young people who know cannabis is illegal in Vietnam In this pie chart, it can be seen that the majority of poll respondents agreed that marijuana is prohibited in Vietnam, while 23% of respondents did not know or did not intend to learn whether marijuana is legal or not.
PART 2. Disadvantages of Consumption of Cannabis 2.1 Reasons to think other young people use cannabis. Get high 16% Try something new 29% Escape from routine 14% All of the above 41%
Get high Try something new Escape from routine All of the above Figure 5: Reasons to think other young people use cannabis This chart asks students about their opinion about the reasons why teens use cannabis, namely "to get high", "to try something new" and "to escape from routine". Almost half of the surveyors chose all three reasons (all of the above), which accounts for 41%. Furthermore, 29% of people think that teenagers consume cannabis out of curiosity, while the proportion of people choosing reasons such as getting high or escaping from daily life is nearly the same, accounting for 16% and 14%, respectively. From these percentages, it is observable that a large number of teenagers often get attracted to something new with a sense of curiosity, or they tend to find something as a way out of their stressful lives. Unfortunately, weed has been on the list as a way of blindly calming the mind.
2.2. Effects of cannabis use. Make the users attached to it Weaken your judgment, problem solving, memory and learning Increase anxiety, panic and psychosis All of the above 0 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 4 8 7 31 Eff ects of cannabis use All of the above Increase anxiety, panic and psychosis Weaken your judgment, problem solving, memory and learning Make the users attached to it Figure 6: Effects of cannabis use Depends on our survey results about the effects of cannabis use. Numerous people think that using cannabis can have some effects that consist of "increased anxiety, panic, and psychosis "weakening your judgment, problem solving, memory, and learning, and "making the users attached to it". Just a few people choose one effect separately.
3.1. Percent of people choosing yes or no if their friend uses cannabis. 57% 43%
Yes No Figure 8: Percent of people choosing yes or no if their friend uses cannabis Moving on to the graph, we asked the surveyors if they were willing to tell their friends if they used marijuana. Surprisingly, the disparity between the percentages of people saying yes and no is not much, with a proportion of 57% who are willing to stop their friends from using this drug and 42% of the surveyors choosing no. On the one hand, the figure of 42% gave us the miserable observation that there are still people who have an attitude of indifference, neglect, or do not care about their friend's or loved one's use of stimulants. On the other hand, there is still a larger share of individuals who want to help their friends not go down the wrong path. As proof of this point, many answers—or we could call them pieces of advice—written by students taking the survey were collected afterwards. Despite everything, drugs are never an option, and many young people know this and are ready to stop people from abusing them.
3.2. The benefits of quitting cannbis. 0 10 20 30 15 8 8 5 5 9 26 The benefits of quitting cannabis Save money Save more time (work, study, with love ones, friends,… ) Breathing clean and deeply Dramatic increase in energy Increase short-term memory Increase in life quality All of the above Figure 9: The benefits of quitting cannabis The benefits of quitting marijuana for young people are seen in the chart above. Most people choose all of the above because they understand them. And young people have also understood that without it, life is so much better, and as many as 15 people choose that it costs a lot of money because 1kg of cannabis costs up to 20–25 million VND when it reaches the user. And there are also 9 other people who also think that quitting marijuana will improve their quality of life.
In this project, we delved into the potential risks and consequences of cannabis use, especially among young people in Hanoi, and emphasize the importance of understanding the potential negative impacts of drug use, these are information and data collected from our project that has been distilled and reinforced with bullet points:
