The Need for Less Restrictive Immigration Immigration research paper HIST 448 San Francisco State University The Need for Less Restrictive Immigration Immigration is a contentious issue around the globe including the United States. There are many reasons why people move to other nations, for instance, some move to other nations because of war and antagonistic reasons, others move in search of better work environments and job opportunities abroad. Besides, some individuals move in search of a better place to live and others consider immigration as a way of escape for the poor people. Many people have come to live out their dreams in America since America's colonization; however, fear and discrimination make the United States government restrict the inflow of immigrants (Walter & Ewing, 2012). There are both pros and cons of immigration and this paper seeks to look at some facts pertinent to immigration. Firstly, immigration does not have many negative effects, as people tend to think it does. One of the major fears that people worry about is the illegal immigrants who take low wage jobs for low prices, making the wages so low (Vegas, 2020). Besides, people fear that less strict immigration policies will lead to an influx of illegal immigrants, as seen during the Amnesty of 1986, where a large number of illegal immigrants moved into the US. Americans and American business owners benefit economically from immigrants who come to work in the US. For instance, companies in the US benefit from
immigrants who provide relatively cheap labor that keeps the business humming and equally elevates profits. In the contrast, Americans feel as though the immigrants are taking away the jobs from them rather than creating the jobs. Economists hold the view that immigrants do not affect the employment of US-born citizens at the local level (Said, 2012). In one instance, an economically failing Beardstown flourished as the outcome of having a large migrant workforce, who worked in the major plant in the town. This gives an assurance that more places in the US can benefit from immigrant workers if it is not for one issue. The US immigration policies make it difficult for immigration into the US. This results from the sheer number of illegal immigrants who come here, hence such policies being put in place. Unfortunately, stricter immigration policies discourage talented legal immigrants from coming to the US, making them immigrate to other countries (Walter & Ewing, 2012). So overall, strict policies do not solve the issue of illegal immigration and have the additional side effect of scaring away intelligent immigrants who may decide to come to the United States. Furthermore, lenient immigration policies can solve some pressing issues in the United States, if people choose to look at the benefits in the end. Problems that have been brought up by immigration are increased crime rates for drug-related and gang- related crimes in the United States. However, instead of targeting all immigrants, the US government can solve this issue of immigration by making it easier to make legal immigrants become citizens so that it focuses more on dealing with these criminals. Moreover, illegal immigrants using public services can be solved if people were more
