Two significant historical figures: martin luther and christopher columbus. Luther, a german theologian, challenged the catholic church's sale of indulgences and advocated for salvation through faith alone. His influential pamphlets led to religious reforms. Columbus, an explorer from spain, initially sought new lands but later turned his expeditions into conquests. His discovery of the new world brought wealth, religious influence, and social structure to spain and its colonies.

Chapter 10 & 11 1 MARTIN LUTHER Reasons: o The righteousness that God demands results in given faith & trust in Jesus Christ satisfying God rather than charitable acts & religious ceremonies A believer who is bound to Christ by faith possesses God’s righteousness o Luther says it is unbiblical to treat charitable acts & religious ceremonies as well as the selling of indulgences (e.g. small cash payments aka almsgiving) as a pardon to one’s salvation to save oneself from suffering in purgatory because only God could bestow that o Luther believed that indulgences went beyond traditional practice & seemed to make salvation something that could be bought & sold In 1520, Luther signed his new direction with 3 famous pamphlets o 1. Address to the Christian Nobility of the German: advised German princes to force political & economic reforms on the Roman church o 2. Freedom of a Christian summarized new teaching of salvation by faith alone It seemed that the pamphlets unintentionally spread because after Luther’s imprisonment during 1520 & 1530s o Luther’s Reformation passed through hands of theologians & into view of the magistrates & princes o Consequentially, they mandated new religious reforms o Gives support that Luther had intentions to reform rather than create a new religion. He stated that there were fallacies in the current way of teaching & he felt that ….?
Chapter 10 & 11 2 COLUMBUS At first, Christopher Columbus set off for expeditions of discovery. Eventually, they rather became expeditions of conquest. Columbus’s mistaken discovery of the New World for land outside of Japan had not failed him. o Spain had benefited extending their empire in both the New World & in South America, gold & silver, exchanged new species of fruits, veggies, & animals. o Other countries followed in voyaging on expeditions of conquest The wealth that Spain benefited from the New World helped finance Spain’s premier role in religious & political wars in the 16th^ & 17th^ centuries, including that of a Europe-wide economic expansion Spain impacted North & South America with the introduction of Roman Catholicism, economic dependency, & social structure
