Notes (write and review main notes / bulk of notes): Core members weren’t allowed to speak Schools such as USC thought of them as “too controversial.” Riots often occurred in the North, filled with antiblack protests. Carmichael calls for Black Power all around the country Many newscasters were filled with fear from his words. Believed that he had violent intentions with his words and didn’t focus on the idea of unity. Debates about self-defense Believed that the presence of the deacons at the riots were unnecessary. “No place for guns,” said Reverend Theodore Seamons. Civil rights workers knew of the danger that was bound to happen, thankful for the armed. Mississippi shows discrimination against African Americans Creates an all-white “regular” delegation at the national convention. Didn’t follow the rules for the national convention. This causes fury for the Democratic Party, since they rejected the idea of a black Mississippi delegation. Carmichael and other members if SNCC travel to Alabama to encourage others on the idea of Black Power. Lowndes County Freedom (LCFO) Carmichael and SNCC members help created this group. Their idea is to “fight back if we had to.” November 1966, in Lowndes County, showed an increase of African American voters compared to whites. LCFO candidates lost, due to pressure from whites to vote for the white candidates instead. This then caused 20% of the African American voter population to not participate. Despite losing noticed an increase in number of voters overall throughout the years. Influence on young African Americans Before weren’t as aware of the Southern movement due to its idea of nonviolence. Became largely influenced due to Carmichael’s words of the idea of Black Power. The summary must be at least three or more sentences): Stokely Carmichael had been a bridge for many of African Americans to help unite due to the idea of Black Power. This idea of Black Power had been a crucial idea because many people at the time were racially separated due to the constant protests all around the country particularly in the South. The idea of Black Power had influenced many African Americans at the time, this had shown an increase in voters among African Americans and had given the SNCC a new look.
