Note-taking is different for everybody because there's so many examples and ways to take notes. There's apps for notes and different styles and systems. For example effective note taking can be on your phone, laptop and pen and paper. Three things to remember for note taking are to think about what is important and said during the lecture. Listen for hints from your instructure. Watch your instructor's body language. Be organized with your notes and it doesn't hurt to re-write them in your sentences. Keep reflecting everyday because it keeps the notes fresh in your mind. Taking notes is very helpful so you cannot forget and make connections with what the material is. Efficient note taking is active engagement in new or old material. If you highlight, underline, copy slides, and writing every word is not really learning because you'll be only transcribing your notes. That's passive note taking. It's also very important to write down questions that pop up as you are going over the notes. Save it for the next lecture to ask the questions. Active note-taking is equivalent to Note making which is curated, processed and synthesized. There's two ways to take notes and that is paper vs digital. No way is the better way of taking notes. Paper note taking you'll remember it better and also learn to do charts, diagrams and tables with certain note-taking apps. While digital you can access your notes from anywhere. Bottom line is use whatever you're comfortable with. Organizing notes is very important. It's great to prepare your nexts before class because
it helps for upcoming exams. Make sure to include page numbers and create an index on the front of the page. If you take notes digitally you can do individual notebooks and tabs on onenote, evernote, and google docs are great note apps to use. While google doc everything you type save automatically. Instructors may give out cues so it's better to be really paying close attention. These cues can be verbal and nonverbal. It's especially important to compare, contrast, make relationships, and summarize your notes. Listen for intonational cues such as raised voice, lowered voice and pauses in between sentences. Guidelines to taking notes are write or type quickly, don't write everything, select the important points to write down or type quickly, also include definitions and formulas. Also write down ideas and concepts and use paraphrase (writing it in your own words) big ideas and telegraphy sentences and use abbreviations. Note-making is organizing and rewriting your notes, reading through, and adding any cues and names and dates. Review and reflection causes you to see all the parts of the material. Reflecting is great for the memory. Three tips to successfully review your notes are recite, reflect, and review. You can improve your notes by reorganizing, restructuring, and writing down questions. Connect with students as you guys go over your notes and share and exchange helpful tips and informing someone may be missing as summarizing main parts. Outlining is important because heading is for the main ideas and subheadings are to support the information and ideas of that content.
