Charise Bailey David Wygant Theater March 10th^2023 Pikes Peak Honky There was a lot to unpack with this live play just by seeing the name I wasn’t really sure what I was going to be viewing but I felt like I had some underlying emotions of what this play may be about also, there was a lot of humor right of the bat I mean these things really do happen to African Americans which is why I can understand the feeling as well as the fear of feeling like even though you are of a different ethnicity that you feel like your under looked. The humor was basically in your face and not necessarily slapstick but more aggressive and in your face about what everyday hardships that African Americans face in daily life, but then there are a lot of serious things such as in the beginning of the play there was mention of “black people don’t get anxiety” which is something in the black community is an issue that is deeply challenging when it comes to mental health it’s a stigma that me being black myself I am not supposed to experience or have any sort of mental health issues. This topic has always been on the forefront with in the community of African American community, it’s almost not like a non existent factor but this also a problem so many African American community have so much mental health problems and a lot of other just look the other way.even though the audience laughed at the part there is still some mental anguish I’ve seen and heard individuals of color have challenges within their community, getting back to the play the brother and sister seem to have their ups and downs as well, it seems that the sister is trying to just get on with her job but she is also a black woman
who understands what’s going on but she’s just not as extremely vocal as her brother about it. There are instances where you see that her brother is emotionally bothered by his corporate job and that his boss is happens to be White, he verbally mentions his anger along with his cussing his boss out and doing things just to see the look on his face he even laughed about it to his sister but you can see the underlying anger, his sister had to sit him down and have heart to heart with her bother, she mentioned that her brother that “because he’s black with a lot of money, you have it in your head that your not black enough”. That really resonated with me because this quote is deep, and lot of people of color feel this frustration and is something that that does happen not feeling successful enough or that you even fit in because of skin color which is still a problem and I personally wish it wasn’t like that but to be honest it is hard being someone of color and in this topic and context that’s what I am in this play. The conversation between the doctor and the corporate boss was another thing that jumped out at me he didn’t call the children “black he called them “urban” and he says “all he could think was that are all black people this loud”? Which is another stereotype. There was also mention that these kids got on the subways and they were having a good time and they may have been being a little loud which was off putting to him. “How racist do I have to be”? Is something that really got me because these are the horrible conversations that other individuals have with each other in “secret” and it’s disgusting the doctor even pauses and gives him this shocked looked and then says “that’s just really racist” it’s blatant and in your face. Watching the dating scene was hard because it seem like he was trying to find someone to bond with but the woman he was speaking to was saying a lot of offensive things she makes mention that you can make fun of anyone and other ethnic groups which isn’t cool and she sees that she has offended him but they are going back and forth on some really offensive jokes and he say is to her that you have to be respectful of your audience which made
