During Reading/ After Reading CW/HW Assignment:
1. At the end of each day’s reading, complete the study guide (for review only).
2. After you finish reading, complete THREE of these open-ended questions. You must
complete these on your own (i.e.- not with a friend).
Thoughtfully and thoroughly respond to the following 3 of the following 5 events/ topics/ prompts by
composing a paragraph for each using 1 quotation from the text (with page numbers, of course!).
Make sure you take other notes that you need to enhance comprehension and add to your character
charts when/ if need be.
1. What should a reader think about the relationship between John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth
based on the discussion about dinner and the interactions with Mary Warren?
2. What is your opinion of Mary Warren? Consider what her priorities seem to be and what this
might indicate about the people of the town in general.
3. Discuss the conflict between Proctor and Reverend Parris.
4. How would you characterize Rev. Hale? What does he seem concerned with?
5. Examine the scene where Elizabeth is questions and subsequently arrested (p76-85). Discuss at
least 2 characters here and what is revealed about them.

Act 2: Reading HW: Study Guide

If you are struggling, here are study guide questions you can look at/ take notes on to help you.  These will not be collected/ graded.

  1. What does Proctor’s hesitation to travel to Salem indicate about his inner conflict?
  2. Explain the metaphor: “The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you.” (p. 58)
  3. Explain the ironic ultimatum the head of the court has given to those who have been arrested.
  4. Explain Proctor’s quote: “If the girl’s a saint now, I think it is not easy to prove she is a fraud, and the town gone so silly.”
  5. What lie does Elizabeth notice Proctor told? How does this feed her current suspicions?
  6. Describe the power Abigail has in the court room.
  7. Upon Mary Warren’s return, she brings many things with her: a. What present does Mary Warren give to Elizabeth? b. How many people have been arrested so far? c. What did Sarah Good do? What other news is revealed about Goody Good?
  8. What will happen to Goody Osburn? Why?
  9. How does Mary Warren save herself from a whipping? Who does Elizabeth believe accused her of witchcraft and why? What does Elizabeth’s comment about “a promise” indicate?
  10. What does Hale’s motivation for visiting the Proctors tell the audience about his personality?
  11. Explain how Hale tests Proctor’s belief in God, as well as the irony in how Proctor fails Hale’s test.
  12. Explain why Cheever is both astonished and afraid when he finds the poppet with the needle in it?
