CHAPTER I
BACKGROUND
1. Background
The literary short story in the modern sense developed in the 19th century as a
distinct literary genre and as a direct result of the growth of periodicals for leisure
reading. According to general rules, a short story is a fictional prose narrative, which
tends to be brief in nature. Though it has many features in common with novels, such as
characters, setting or plot, a short story mainly deals with a single event or episode and
often a single character. It is also shorter than a novel or a novelette, so the characters
may not be as fully developed or as complex.
Every literary text consists of two elements. It is intrinsic elements and extrinsic
elements. Intrinsic elements are the elements of a story that can be found inside of the
story. We can analyze it easily because all of the facts are inside the
books. It could tell about the character, plots, setting, moral messages,
scenes, etc. The extrinsic element of literature was about the things
that can’t really be found inside the story itself. It wasn’t the material
but the facts and information that supports and surrounds the story. It
could tell about the author; inspiration, life experiences, etc., it could
also tell about the world situation; past, present or may be the future,
and many other supporting facts.
In this paper the author will elaborate the extrinsic elements of the short story.
Here the author chooses the short story Dip in the Pool written by Roald Dahl.

CHAPTER II DISSCUSSION

  1. (^) The Extrinsic Elements of the Short Story Extrinsic elements are everything outside the story. It consists of facts that support the story was written. The extrinsic elements generally contain author’s life, the historical background when the story was written, cultural background, and social background. a. Author’s life The author’s situation or what the author was experiencing now affect the story making. The author would be able to describe the storyline with details, because they had experienced this kind of situation. When making a literary work, the author could reflect back to his/her life. b. Historical Background Historical background might be described by the flow of the story. It could be shown by a timeline too. The historical background can be the history or the past of the setting the story was. It could also shows the development or improvement of a certain thing or condition. Describing the historical background might also be used to send messages to make readers realize the mistake and take action to fix the bad record. c. Cultural Background The cultural background inside the story may also connects to the author’s life. As for example, the author’s cultures may be mixed into the story. It might display the life or historical event in the country or area that the author lived by. The cultural background may also refer to the setting and plot of the story. It depends on where the story takes scene. d. Social Background The story depends on the social background of the author. He or she would probably write something that connects to the community around them. It could also be the social problems that were happening on the world or the social organization inside a certain country. Social background can also be used to describe a person’s biography and how it affects their life nowadays.

makes everyone sacrifice everything, even his life. Relate to what the writer had experienced during his life, at the 1950s, when the story was published, Dahl had lived in an empty house owned by some friends. He ever faces the financial problem the same as what happened with Mr. Botibol who will lose all of his saving money. When he loses his money, it means there will be a financial problem he gets. The financial problem faced by the writer might inspire him to write this story. The relationship between Dahl’s life and the story Dip in the Pool is his experience as a pilot, as well. Compare to his experience of what he had passed as a pilot; he might describe it through a story which happened in the sea. What happened during the sailing time, such as the bad weather the sailor has to pass might the reflection of the obstacle he ever passed during he did his job. Another relationship is between the marriage of Roald Dahl in 1953 and the reason why Mr. Botibol does the gambling. Mr. Botibol has imagined about the result of doing gambling. Unfortunately, in the beginning he just expects the advantage of gambling and ignoring the risk. He imagines buying a Lincoln convertible for his wife. It might be the writer’s imagination or his plan before he gets married because the story was published in 1952, one year before he married. According to the story the Mr. Botibol want to make his wife proud of him, probably Roald Dahl wants do the same things, as well, therefore he writes the story to share his imagination.

b. Historical Background “Dip in the Pool” is a macabre short story by Roald Dahl that was originally published in the 19 January 1952 edition of The New Yorker. It later appeared in the collection Someone Like You (1953). Dahl's short stories are known for their unexpected endings, and his children's books for their unsentimental, macabre, often darkly comic mood, featuring villainous adult enemies of the child characters.

Roald Dahl looks at the Post-War period through his short story “Dip in the Pool”. A post-war period or postwar period is the interval immediately following the end of a war. Post-War period (1945-1964): The academic orientation has been both strength and a weakness. The strength is that one expects technical competence, and gets it. In fact, the very volume of good short stories in the post-War period is partly accounted for by the training of the writers. They not only read their predecessors on their own, but read them for their academic reasons. The weakness is that the writer tends to get caught up in a kind of

academic inbreeding, going back to Roald Dahl. He learns that there is a way to do things and hesitates to find his own way. He is a follower, not a pioneer. It is a healthy sign then that there has been a reaction against the carefully wrought story, an effort by some writers to break through the old forms. c. Cultural Background The story was written by Roald Dahl, and published in the 19 January 1952. At that time period, in every British cruise ship, there is a betting pool where the passengers will try to correctly guess the number of how many miles the ship will travel that day, within ten miles above ("high field") or below ("low field") the captain's own guess. Therefore, in this prose, Roald try to take us back to that kind of situation with Mr. Botibol as the character in the story, where most of the passengers were trying to guess the closest number that they can predict by risking their money on it, and believing that they will get a larger amount of money in return. A lot of intention was hiding behind those bet, like the main character’s intention was to buy his wife a light green convertible, which was very famous and ‘cool’ at that time. From the dialogue as well, we can see how polite and formal they were talking to each other. It shows us how the culture in British 1900s was

d. Social Background The reason why the story tells about gambling is due to Roald Dahl like to gamble but he is not an addict. He even has a group to do gambling. It means British like gambling at the time. 1800s-1900s was years that gambling began to appear as a commercialization. That is why in this story gambling in the cruise is legal for everyone. In 1940 – 1950 housewives in England were less happy because of financial difficulties; it is represented in the story where Mr.Botibol wants to make his wife proud of him by buying her a car (light green convertible) through gambling. The reason why Mr.Botibol wants to buy a car for his wife is because in 1950 is buying and having a car is significant factor especially having light green convertible. Roald Dahl married at 1953 with a woman named Patricia Neal. From this fact probably Roald Dahl positioned himself as Mr.Botibol which wanted to make his wife proud, because Roald Dahl wanted marry a woman.

CHAPTER III

  • Dewa Ayu Trisna Dewi The relation or the evidence of the bullying in the short story Dip in the Pool is first, in the text that says “some were completely unruffled, some were opening smug, a number of the smug ones making jokes about food and whether in order to torture the few who were beginning to suffer.” Second one is when the old lady says that there is a guy jumping to the sea but the caregiver does not care and thinks that the old lady just imagines something. The caregiver does not believe with something that really happens. So, bullying is not only about giving a harsh word but also when ignoring something important. (Additional Answer from other groups)
  • A.A Gede Hari Wishnawa In his opinion, in the story the bullying is delivering. Mr Botibol jump to the ocean sacrifice himself. We entertain with that and feel it is a humor so it means that is a symbol of the bully.
  • (^) Shanti Pradnya Paramita The reflection of bullying can be seen in the whole of the story. For example the writer of the story lived in poverty when he was child and some people make his life as a joke. It is reflected in the story, when we read the story hopefully we will think about how Mr. Botibol was. Mr. Botibol jump to the sea and the reader feel entertain; we think it is a comedy story. But truly it is not a comedy but it is a serious case.
  • K. Dian Rani “Some were completely unruffled, somewre openly smug, a number of the smug ones making jokes about food and weather in order to torture the few who were beginning to suffer.” It is not a bullying part, because it is only someone who makes a joke. In the story, Mr.Botibol got his karma because he plays gambling. If he loses the game he must accept his defeat.
  1. Question: What make the story make sense Mr. Botibol in the middle class and not to loose the action? (Exis Wijaya 1601541005) Answer:
  • I Gde Ari Trisna Wahyudi He was in the cruise and has a sudden goal that he wants buy a green light convertible for his wife. The story tells us also that Mr. Botibol bet all of his saving for the betting pool. When he knows that he will lose all of his money in return you will not in the middle class anymore but you will be in the lower class, so that is why he jumps to slow down the ship. But he chooses the wrong witness in which the old lady has a mental disorder and nobody believes in her. That is why he is lost with no more information.
  1. Question: Does it has relation with social background that end up with ironic? (Luh ledi Ruscita Dewi 1601541030) Answer: - Ananta Wijaya At that time he author had financial difficulties, so if we as Mr. Botibol, we bet everything that we have, we will do anything that we can to win the bet. At that time, when Mr. Botibol thinks that he will be lose, he try to make the ship slow down by jumping to the sea and thinks the old lady will alert the other people and tell them about him but he chooses a the wrong witness because the old woman has a mental disorder. So, the relation between the jumping with the social background is at that time he has financial problem, if we as Mr. Botibol, we will do the same way. - Ni Wayan Anik Wikantari The relation between the social backgrounds with the ironic ending is that if you have lack of money or you have money and you will lose it, so, what is your decision? It is a difficult decision. If we have lack of money our mind is blank and we might do everything even sacrificing our life and this is happened to Mr. Botibol. In the social life, if we have lack of money we will do everything to save our life but Mr. Botibol chooses the wrong decision as an ironic. (Additional answer from another group) - Wahyu Widiatmika The ironic relate to the symbol of bullying. For example in the first part when Mr. Botibol ask to the purser about the option how is the captain already plan this. The purser seems like doing a strange thing before playing the game. The bullying treated unequally in this situation. Mr. Botibol doesn’t have any people’s help because he got bullying.
