b. To elaborate the extrinsic elements of the story Dip in the Pool
CHAPTER II DISSCUSSION
makes everyone sacrifice everything, even his life. Relate to what the writer had experienced during his life, at the 1950s, when the story was published, Dahl had lived in an empty house owned by some friends. He ever faces the financial problem the same as what happened with Mr. Botibol who will lose all of his saving money. When he loses his money, it means there will be a financial problem he gets. The financial problem faced by the writer might inspire him to write this story. The relationship between Dahl’s life and the story Dip in the Pool is his experience as a pilot, as well. Compare to his experience of what he had passed as a pilot; he might describe it through a story which happened in the sea. What happened during the sailing time, such as the bad weather the sailor has to pass might the reflection of the obstacle he ever passed during he did his job. Another relationship is between the marriage of Roald Dahl in 1953 and the reason why Mr. Botibol does the gambling. Mr. Botibol has imagined about the result of doing gambling. Unfortunately, in the beginning he just expects the advantage of gambling and ignoring the risk. He imagines buying a Lincoln convertible for his wife. It might be the writer’s imagination or his plan before he gets married because the story was published in 1952, one year before he married. According to the story the Mr. Botibol want to make his wife proud of him, probably Roald Dahl wants do the same things, as well, therefore he writes the story to share his imagination.
b. Historical Background “Dip in the Pool” is a macabre short story by Roald Dahl that was originally published in the 19 January 1952 edition of The New Yorker. It later appeared in the collection Someone Like You (1953). Dahl's short stories are known for their unexpected endings, and his children's books for their unsentimental, macabre, often darkly comic mood, featuring villainous adult enemies of the child characters.
Roald Dahl looks at the Post-War period through his short story “Dip in the Pool”. A post-war period or postwar period is the interval immediately following the end of a war. Post-War period (1945-1964): The academic orientation has been both strength and a weakness. The strength is that one expects technical competence, and gets it. In fact, the very volume of good short stories in the post-War period is partly accounted for by the training of the writers. They not only read their predecessors on their own, but read them for their academic reasons. The weakness is that the writer tends to get caught up in a kind of
academic inbreeding, going back to Roald Dahl. He learns that there is a way to do things and hesitates to find his own way. He is a follower, not a pioneer. It is a healthy sign then that there has been a reaction against the carefully wrought story, an effort by some writers to break through the old forms. c. Cultural Background The story was written by Roald Dahl, and published in the 19 January 1952. At that time period, in every British cruise ship, there is a betting pool where the passengers will try to correctly guess the number of how many miles the ship will travel that day, within ten miles above ("high field") or below ("low field") the captain's own guess. Therefore, in this prose, Roald try to take us back to that kind of situation with Mr. Botibol as the character in the story, where most of the passengers were trying to guess the closest number that they can predict by risking their money on it, and believing that they will get a larger amount of money in return. A lot of intention was hiding behind those bet, like the main character’s intention was to buy his wife a light green convertible, which was very famous and ‘cool’ at that time. From the dialogue as well, we can see how polite and formal they were talking to each other. It shows us how the culture in British 1900s was
d. Social Background The reason why the story tells about gambling is due to Roald Dahl like to gamble but he is not an addict. He even has a group to do gambling. It means British like gambling at the time. 1800s-1900s was years that gambling began to appear as a commercialization. That is why in this story gambling in the cruise is legal for everyone. In 1940 – 1950 housewives in England were less happy because of financial difficulties; it is represented in the story where Mr.Botibol wants to make his wife proud of him by buying her a car (light green convertible) through gambling. The reason why Mr.Botibol wants to buy a car for his wife is because in 1950 is buying and having a car is significant factor especially having light green convertible. Roald Dahl married at 1953 with a woman named Patricia Neal. From this fact probably Roald Dahl positioned himself as Mr.Botibol which wanted to make his wife proud, because Roald Dahl wanted marry a woman.
