PSCI 101: American Political Systems
Spring 2007
Paper Assignment #2
Due: Wednesday, 21 March
James Wilson begins chapter 8 of American Government with
the observation that “the American presidency is a unique
office, with elements of both great strength and profound
weakness built into it by its constitutional origins.”
Write a paper discussing two examples of both strengths and
weaknesses of the American presidency. In addition to
discussing two strengths and two weaknesses (using
references from Wilson), I would also like you to support
your analysis by citing examples in recent New York Times
articles about President Bush. These examples should
highlight each strength and weakness you choose to examine
in your paper.
This is your second paper opportunity for class. Please
reflect on your experience with your first papers and try
to improve upon your writing. Keep doing the things you
have proven you do well; try to avoid the problems you may
have had in earlier papers. Remember:
1. Make sure you use Chicago Manual style of citation.
This style uses footnotes and the proper form is
explained in many books on writing styles, including
the Simon and Schuster Handbook.
2. Please include an honor code statement at the end of
your paper and sign it. The statement should read:
“I have been honest and have not observed any
dishonesty.”
3. Proofread your papers for typos, spelling mistakes
and grammar errors. These lower the style grade.
4. Finally, you should make sure to have proper
references to The New York Times throughout the
paper. These quotations should strongly support the
other references to the general theories and
assertions by Wilson in American Government.
5. Papers should be no longer than three pages
(excluding your bibliography page).
6. Please include a formal bibliography for your paper.
