Texas Irrigator License - Hydraulics

2024 - 2025 Exam Review Questions

and Answers 100%Pass

Hydraulic Design Steps - Answer>> 1. Layout heads

  1. Head inventory
  2. Group in Zones --Determine limiting gpm from WM & service line
  3. Layout Pipe --Put valve in middle & closer to side with less gpm to make the critical head calculations easier.
  4. Size pipe --Start at a dead end. --Work towards the water source. --Don't size a pipe unless everything downstream has been sized. --Make mainlines 1" or larger
  5. Check Critical Head --L. F. D. 100. I. A. (Ladies Fall Down 100x In Abeline) --Length of pipe, Flow, Diameter of pipe, pressure loss per 100', Item loss, Accumulated loss --LFD. Use Design --100. Uses Reference Charts --I. Use #s from LFD & 100 for Item loss. --A. Add losses from I. --Other Equations. Use DP (Design Pressure) & AHP (Actual Head Pressure) to determine if the zone works.
  6. Schedule --Determine precipitation rate

Flow - Answer>> Movement of water in pipes. Measured as gpm (gallons per minute). Causes friction loss Flow Restrictions - Answer>> Physical restrictions in parts of an irrigation system that affect the flow of water causing a pressure loss. Foot-Head - Answer>> Measure of pressure equivalent to 0. psi and equal to weight of 1' of water on a 1 sq in surface. FPS - Answer>> Feet per second Maintained through size. Think of it like traffic. As velocity increased flow increases. Copper is 9 fps. Brass 7.5 fps. PVC 5 fps. Friction Loss - Answer>> Pressure loss due to friction as water flows through parts. Rougher means more friction loss. Hydraulics - Answer>> 1. Study of mechanical properties of fluid in motion or rest.

  1. Calculation of pressure losses & irrigation system requirements. Matched Precipitation Rate (MPR) - Answer>> When all heads in a zone produce similar precipitation rates regardless of their arc.

i.e. With MPR, a 4 gpm full nozzle will put out 2 gpm on a half nozzle and 1 gpm on a quarter nozzle. Each quarter section receives the same precipitation rate of 1 gpm. Pressure - Answer>> Amount of energy available to move water. Expressed as Pounds per Square Inch (PSI). Pressure Loss - Answer>> Loss of pressure from friction or increase of elevation. Pressure Rating - Answer>> Method of controlling the wall thickness of pipe so all pipe in a class have the same pressure rating. Pressure Regulator - Answer>> Mechanical device to lower the water pressure on downstream side. PSI - Answer>> Pounds per square inch Radius - Answer>> Distance from center of circle to outside curve. Head-to-Head spacing is equal to the radius. Slope - Answer>> Rise/Run. Change of elevation over distance. Expressed as ratio or %. Static Pressure - Answer>> Pressure of water at rest. Static Water - Answer>> Water at rest. Velocity of Water - Answer>> Speed at which water moves through piping. Measured in FPS.
