Fairy Tale Summaries
Jorinda and Jorindel
The three characters in this fairy tale are an old fairy, and a young couple named Jorinda
and Jorindel. The conflict in the story was that an old fairy would change maidens into birds and
enchant men so that they would not approach her castle. During the day, the old fairy took the
shape of many things but at night, she always took the shape of an old woman. She lived in a
castle deep in the woods. If any man ventured near her castle she would put a spell on them
wherein they could neither speak nor move. Then, after she had their promise that they would
never come near her castle again, she would let them go. Whenever a beautiful maiden came
near her castle, she would transform them into birds and put them in a cage in her castle. She had
700 cages in her castle with enchanted birds in them. One day, a young couple named Jorinda
and Jorindel, who were to marry soon, went for a walk in the woods, and they warned
themselves to be careful not to venture too close to the castle. However, they got lost and found
themselves near the castle. As they stood trying to figure out which way to go Jorinda was
singing, but stopped suddenly and when Jorindel turned to see why he saw that she had been
changed into a nightingale, and he saw an owl fly three times around them and then fly into a
bush. An old woman came from the bush and took the nightingale away. But he could not move
or speak until the old woman came back and took the spell off of him. Jorindel was heartbroken
and tried to live his life without Jorinda. One night he had a dream that he found a beautiful

One day, a young couple named Jorinda and Jorindel, who were to marry soon, went for a walk in the woods, and they warned themselves to be careful not to venture too close to the castle. However, they got lost and found themselves near the castle. As they stood trying to figure out which way to go Jorinda was singing, but stopped suddenly and when Jorindel turned to see why he saw that she had been changed into a nightingale, and he saw an owl fly three times around them and then fly into a bush. An old woman came from the bush and took the nightingale away. But he could not move or speak until the old woman came back and took the spell off of him. Jorindel was heartbroken and tried to live his life without Jorinda. One night he had a dream that he found a beautiful

flower that gave him the power to disenchant the old woman’s castle. When he awoke, he searched for the flower and when he found it, he went to the castle and disenchanted all the maidens, including Jorinda. Jorinda and Jorindel were married and lived happily ever after. Old Sultan The fairy tale Old Sultan had several characters. It had a farmer and his wife, a dog (Sultan), a wolf, a boar, and a cat. The first conflict in the story was that the farmer planned to kill Sultan because he was old and toothless and was of no further use to the farmer. But Sultan heard the farmer’s plan to kill him the following day and went to this friend the wolf who came up with a plan. The wolf would pretend to steal the couple’s young baby, and Sultan would “rescue” the baby, thereby endearing himself to the farmer and his wife. The plan worked and Sultan was treated very well after that. The wolf felt that in reward for helping Sultan, that the dog should let him steal one of the farmer’s sheep. But Sultan was loyal to the farmer and told the farmer of the wolf’s plan. The farmer set a trap for the wolf and the wolf was unsuccessful in stealing a sheep. Thus, brought the second conflict because now the wolf was mad at Sultan and called him out to the woods to fight with him and with the boar as he second. Sultan agreed and took the farmer’s three-legged cat with him as his second. When the wolf and the board saw them approaching from afar, they mistook the cat’s gait as his stopping to pick up stones to use in the fight, and they mistook the cat’s tail (which he held proudly straight up in the air) as a sword that Sultan would use to fight them. So, the wolf hid up in a tree, and the boar hid himself in the bushes. When Sultan and the cat arrived at the spot to fight, they did not see the wolf nor the boar. But the cat heard a sound from the bushes and thinking it to be a mouse, jumped on it and attacked it ferociously. As the boar ran off he told them the wolf was up in the tree. Sultan and

were only beautiful shrubs surrounding the kingdom when the prince approached it. He saw everyone and everything frozen in time, asleep. He searched for the princess. When he found her asleep in the tower, her beauty caused him to kiss her, which awoke her, and the kingdom, from their enchanted sleep. Then the prince and Briar Rose were married and lived happily ever after. The Frog-Prince The characters in The Frog-Prince are the frog-prince, the king, and the princess. The conflict is that the prince had been turned into a frog. A princess was out one day and lost her favorite ball in a spring. The frog-prince heard her crying and asked what the matter was. When she told him that she had lost her ball in the spring, he told her he would get it for her if she promised to take him home, let him eat from her plate, and sleep in her bed. The princess agreed, but as soon as she got her ball back, she was overcome with excitement and ran home, forgetting all about the frog. However, the frog knocked on her door that night and reminded her of her promise. When the princess slammed the door in his face and ran away, her father asked her what was wrong, and she told him what had happened with the frog at the spring. The king told her that she had made a promise, and she would have to abide by it. So, she let the frog in, let him eat from her plate, and put him in her bed on a pillow. In the morning, the frog left. But he returned the next evening and repeated the same pattern. After the third night of his doing the same, when the princess awoke she found not a frog, but a handsome prince standing at the foot of her bed. The prince explained to her that he had been put under a curse by a spiteful fairy and for the curse to be broken, he had to find a princess who would let him eat from her plate and sleep in her bed for three nights in a row. Once the spell was broken he asked the princess to come live with him in his kingdom. They traveled to his kingdom and lived there happily for many years.

Sweetheart Roland The characters are the witch, the witch’s daughter, the witch’s stepdaughter, Roland, and a shepherd. The witch hated her stepdaughter, so she made a plan to come into her room that night and chop off the stepdaughter’s head. The stepdaughter overheard, so she switched places with the witch’s real daughter that night and the witch accidently killed her own daughter. The stepdaughter went to her sweetheart Roland and told him they must run away. When the witch awoke and found that she had killed her own daughter, she chased the stepdaughter and Roland but as she caught up to them, the stepdaughter first used a magic wand to change Roland into a pond, and herself into a duck, and the next day she turned herself into a flower and Roland into a musician. When the witch approached Roland, she was caught up in a magical tune that he played that caused her to dance in a frenzy and die. Roland left the stepdaughter to go to prepare for the wedding. However, he became enchanted with another and forgot about the stepdaughter. The stepdaughter changed herself into a flower, hoping to get trod upon. Instead, a shepherd plucked her and kept her in a chest. She left the chest every day, tended the shepherd’s house and returned to the chest before he got home. A wise woman advised the shepherd to listen early in the morning and if he heard or saw anything move, he should throw a sheet over it to break whatever enchantment was on it. He did this and when he covered the flower, the stepdaughter turned back into a beautiful girl. He asked her to marry him, but her heart still belonged to Roland. But she stayed to continue keeping house for him. When Roalnd was to marry, there was a celebration and all the young women had to attend and sing a song. The stepdaughter was forced to attend and when she sang, Roland’s memories of her came back and he remembered her as his true love. They got married and lived happily ever after.
