previous and concurrent courses. See above criteria.  Unsatisfactory (U): the student does not consistently perform the competency, objective, or outcome. They are performing in such a manner which expresses that knowledge and skills reflected in the current course content and from previous courses are not being applied in the clinical area. However, if a student is a danger to self or others as judged by the nursing faculty member, the student may be removed immediately from the clinical setting and may be dismissed from the nursing program. In some situations, at the bedside, it may be necessary for the faculty member to correct a student verbally or physically to prevent a student from following through with an action that is potentially harmful to a client. This action will be followed by a private discussion. SAMPLE GRADE DETERMINATION *Exam #1 80 *Exams = 80.5 x 0.60 = 48. *Exam #2 77 *Quizzes = 90 x 0.05 = 4. *Exam #3 86 *IPR = 95 x 0.05 **= 4. *** Exam #4 75 * Fundamental HESI = 84 x 0.05 = 4. *Exam #5 85 * Journal Article Paper = 88 x 0.05 = 4. *Exam #6 80 * HESI Practice = 100 x 0.05 = 5. 483 = 80.5 (avg.) * Final Exam = 80 x 0.15 = 12. FINAL GRADE: 48.3 + 4.5 + 4.75 + 4.2 + 4.4 + 5.0 + 12.0 = 83.15 (C) COURSE COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS In order to pass NURS 120, the student MUST :

  1. Achieve a final passing score of 80% for the theory portion of the course;
  2. Achieve a passing score of 80% (satisfactory) on the medication calculation competency;
  3. Achieve an overall evaluation score of satisfactory for the clinical portion of the course;
  4. Achieve satisfactory performance for each critical mastery skill. TIME COMMITMENT NECESSARY TO EARN COURSE CREDIT SCHS subscribes to a philosophy commonly held by institutions across higher education: achievement of success with the college-level study will necessitate that the student devotes both scheduled ‘in-class’ time as well as significant ‘out-of-class’ time to meeting course outcomes. In order to successfully achieve all outcomes for this 8-credit hour course, it is expected that each student will participate in the scheduled ‘in-class’ lecture and dedicate an approximate total of 340 hours during the session for class preparation and work time. Out-of-class time will be necessary for completing textbook readings and related assignments, preparing for course exams, the final exam, course projects, and other assignments.

Tasks & Time Allocation for this 8 Credit Hour Course Based on a 15 Week Semester: Tasks Approximate Time Hours* Participation in class In classroom learning 60 Preparation for CLC Minimum of 3 hours per week 21 Preparation for clinical Minimum of 5 hours per week 40 Completion of textbook readings, non-graded and graded assignments Minimum of 10 hours per week 150 Preparation for course test Minimum of 9 hours for each test (total of 6 tests) 54 Preparation for the final exam Minimum of 15 hours 15 **Minimum Hours per Semester 340 Note: This is intended to be a time management tool only. The approximate times listed above are for planning purposes, as you prepare your week as a student. Time must be allocated appropriately to achieve maximum results during your time in this class. Failure to plan may yield less than desirable outcomes. ** ATTENDANCE A student who has an acute illness that is contagious to others in the healthcare setting should not participate in class or clinical. Examples of an acute illness may include, but are not limited to influenza, gastroenteritis, open and/or draining wounds, shingles, etc. The clinical attendance policy will apply to these situations. A student who is ill or otherwise unable to attend a class as scheduled should notify the faculty via email or text prior to the start of class. No texting, emails, or sending messages via other students will be accepted as notification of an absence unless there are extenuating circumstances. REMINDER: The student is responsible for missed assignments and material during an absence. Class Attendance Information regarding class attendance can be found in the College Catalog at https://www.schs.edu/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/2019-2020-SCHS-Catalog.pdf Clinical/Simulation Attendance Due to the nature of clinical, lab, and simulation, students are expected to arrive on time and be present for each assigned clinical or simulation experience in its entirety. Students are permitted to miss one (1) clinical, lab, or simulation day and have one (1) tardy each semester. If a student arrives to the clinical or simulation experience within 15 minutes of the scheduled start time, the student will receive a tardy. If the student is more than 15 minutes late, they may be sent home, counting this occurrence as an absence. Any subsequent tardy of any kind may result in the student being dismissed

Students WILL discuss, with clinical faculty, if they feel uncomfortable performing any procedure prior to performing the procedure. Students MUST notify the faculty member immediately if any untoward effects occur; especially if an occurrence report needs to be completed. Examples of untoward effects include medication error, harm to patient, student injury, or student error in judgment. TURNITIN ®

Students agree that, by taking this course, all work submitted for a grade is subject to submission for textual similarity review to Turnitin.com for the detection of plagiarism. All submitted papers will be included as source documents in the Turnitin.com reference database solely for the purpose of detecting plagiarism of such papers. Use of the Turnitin.com service is subject to the Terms and Conditions of Use posted on the Turnitin.com site. Turnitin®^ is a web-based resource that Southside College of Health Sciences makes available to students and faculty to comprehensively check written work to identify a similarity index for matching text with a database of existing written work, web pages, and electronic journals. Turnitin®^ assists students to identify potential plagiarism and supports the student toward academic integrity and originality in order to further develop their scholarly writing skills. Student assignments that are submitted to Turnitin®^ generate a Turnitin®^ Originality Report that students use to further edit their written work prior to submitting to faculty for feedback and evaluation. A similarity index of more than 25% will not be accepted and will result in a grade of zero (0). COURSE ASSIGNMENTS Quizzes Quizzes will be given throughout the course:  One “1” quiz will be given and correspond with each course test for didactic content.  Quizzes will be completed and submitted online through Canvas.  Quizzes consist of 10 questions and students will have 13 minutes to complete each quiz.  Quizzes will open on the specified due date at 1205 and close at 2359. If quizzes are not submitted on the due date by 2359, a grade of zero “0” will be recorded.  If a student anticipates being late or absent for a scheduled assignment, they will need to work with the faculty to negotiate a time to complete the assignment. See “Testing Scheduling” information in the Nursing Program Student Handbook. HESI Practice Exams and Review Students in NURS120 are required to take a Health Education Systems Incorporated (HESI) Exam. Adequate preparation is essential. The use of HESI Practice Exams is utilized for preparation for the proctored examinations. The Fundamentals Practice Exam is comprised of 50 questions. Each question that is answered incorrectly on the practice exam requires addressing three critical points related to the missed topic. As an example, if the topic missed is Angina, one critical point would be to educate the client to lie down if experiencing dizziness. The three critical points must be submitted by the due date in order to receive credit for completing the practice exam. See course calendar for due date. HESI Fundamentals Examination
