Nayely Ortega Professor Hanson February 5, 2017 Film Response Star Wars a New Hope The film A New Hope follows Joseph Campbell’s pattern of myth with the heroes in the movie. The heroes go through many obstacles to complete their mission at the end of the movie. The obstacles are things that we don’t see in real life and for Luke and the rest of the heroes to go through that is something in that we as audience see is in movies. When the hero Luke Skywalker was called to the adventure/quest by Obi Wan to go help Princess Leia he denied the call at first but then he changed his mind and decided to go after all. Luke refused the call at first because of his family. He did not want leave his family alone at the time, but they needed his help and that’s when he meets Obi Wan. He then was later convinced to go with Obi Wan after the death of his aunt and uncle to help Obi and in return Obi would teach Luke how to use the force once owned by his dad. Luke passes the threshold of but then he had to survive the monster. The monster in this case is Death Star and the tie fighters coming after Luke. Luke was not symbolically killed and reborn, but Obi Wan was killed because he sacrificed himself in a lightsaber duel with his former apprentice Darth Vader and he then comes back as a force ghost. During the film, Luke does not pass through any series of ordeals or tests of his character. Then at the end of the film, Luke then rescues Princess Leia with the help of the other heroes in the movie which are Han Solo and Chewbacca at the end of the movie and they all end up getting the thanks they deserved for completing the mission. They both receive a metal for their
bravery. In this film Luke Skywalker does not reconcile with his father like I thought was going to happen. The reconciliation between Luke and his father happens in the second film. Then Luke Skywalker proves that the Force is with him by destroying the empire’s dreaded monster Death Star.
