William Blake
Painter and a poet - recognised as poet after 150 years of his death
Why he wasn’t recognised while living ?
1. Age of reason - but he considered imagination to be all - therefore his notion was
considered wrong - he depicted many pics to criticise his age - Newton with animal
body has a divider crawls on a world map - trying to measure the entire world with a
divider. - this made him unpopular
2. He’s mad - asks random women if they’ve seen fairy’s funeral- he and his wife reading
paradise lost naked with a a helmet
3. Religious convention was different - he says 10 commandments has to be destroyed -
creation of two gods - Oz - God of Old Testament || Unizen - young God of New
Testament - they’re at war - was against the orthodoxy of the church hides the view of
god- landscape

Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard

~Thomas gray

  • It celebrate the death of rude forefathers - uneducated ancestors - the illiterates
  • It took so much effort to perfect the poem - 7 years - if one go on polishing polishing polishing
    • it reaches the peak - if you aim at perfection you’ll go to the great - it is not possible to attain perfection in an art.
  • Why Dr. Johnson didn’t like Gray - coz he had the romantic cues - he’s an odd man out - DR. J commented him with 2 remarks 1. Gray cannot be called the prominent poet in the 1st row of the English poet - rather he can be the 1st in the 2nd row of the English poet. 2. There are certain poets whom we cannot admire but we worship them -Gray is one among them 3. There are some people who appear to be tall by walking tip of the toe - they exaggerate their height - same with Gray - he appears to be high
  • I’ll be happy to be the author of the poem rather than being the general who conquered the Quebec ~ Gray
  • English men usually have the fear of death - in order to suppress it they tend to write poem on death - eg. D. H. Lawrence Bavarian Gentian - a flower - DHL is a vivid colour user , but he used only 2 colours - blue & black - life after death - blue - petals of the flower - a kind of hope
    • “ I’m dying just give me this flower - I’ll take this torch flower and enter the hell gate - I don’t want any rituals and all” - this shows his fear of death
  • In the broad day light who needs an oil lamp - perspective of death in Geethanjali by Tagore
  • This style of poetry inspired many - Graveyard school of poetry
  • Lastly ends with a epitaph - 'all the tears have brought him a friend ’ - Richard west 24 March’
  • Its a late evening - after a while it would become dark - the farmers are returning home with the cow - 2 things that disturbs this silence - (i) t he bells of the cows (ii) noise of the insects - the crickets
  • There’s a old tower - an old owl taken its shelter its home here -the owl is complaining to the moon that someone had disturbed the silence - it hoots
  • It is because of poverty that they couldn’t come up in life - no education, no good lifestyle - but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have talent - either they are Gem in ocean or flowers in dessert
    • despite their talents they are unrecognised coz of poverty
  • Among the ones buried under the earth there may be ppl like ,
    • John Hampton^ - who stood against monarchy - a^ revolutionary^ who stood for the people’s cause
    • Milton^ - a great^ poet^ -^ opportunity^ made him the greatest - not everyone gets this opportunity
    • Oliver Cromwell^ - negative example - a^ dictator
  • Robin Hood’s epitaph - if you’re a man be careful about your purse , if you’re a women be careful about your heart
  • It is written in fault English - a lot of grammatical errors - it is written with biblical reference but it is faulty -Their favourite book is the bible and job is farming
  • The shepherd’s death - morning with sheep, afternoon nap and evening with sheep - for the past 2 days I dint see him - 3rd day I saw his funeral possession
  • Don’t judge the person lying here in the graveyard with his strength and weakness - coz he has reached the aboard of god - where strength hand weakness dent matter anymore - he’s now with god rn.
  • Critics say its a epitaph written for him
