Chemical Principles II Lab: Experiment Schedule and Notebook Requirements, Lecture notes of Chemistry

The schedule, topics, and requirements for the chemical principles ii lab course during the spring semester 2015. Students are expected to attend all labs, prepare for each experiment, and maintain a clear and organized lab notebook. The document also covers safety guidelines and the evaluation criteria for lab reports.

CHEM 2984 - CHEMICAL PRINCIPLES II LAB
Professor: Bradley Brown PH.D. 302 PHS 587-3676 BrownBB@alfredstate.edu
Texts: Laboratory Manual for Chemistry, hot pink edition, Amman, 2013
Materials: The following should be available during the lab:
1. safety glasses/goggles 2. Mead® composition book
2. permanent ink pen 4. Sharpie®
5. calculator 6. Ruler
Attendance: Obviously, attendance for all labs is required. However, if you need to make up a lab, make
arrangements prior to the missing lab or you will forfeit that potential grade. Acceptable
absences are explained in Academic Regulations 503 of the 2014 Student Handbook.
MISSING TWO OR MORE LABS OVER THE SEMESTER WILL RESULT IN A FAILING GRADE FOR THE
COURSE. See the CHEM 2984 Lecture Syllabus for further detail.
ASSIGNMENTS: Read each assigned experiment (Introduction and Procedure) as well as answer any pre-lab
questions prior to coming to lab. Also, include a brief introduction/purpose, materials,
summarized procedure, and appropriate data tables for that week’s experiment written in
your lab notebook prior to carrying out the experiment. Preparation will be reflected in
your grade.
There are two types of Lab Reports:
A. Minor Lab Reports will be graded in lab and returned before you leave or the next
day(s). These reports will be written entirely in your lab notebook and contain
information described below, and further defined in a supplemental handout, The
Chemistry Lab Notebook available on course Blackboard and in lab.
B. Major Lab Reports will be composed of your lab book entries as described above
in the Minor Lab Report section, as well as, a separate 2-3 page type-written formal
report that contains a description of the Theory underlying the experimental
procedure. Major lab reports will be due 2 days after completion of the experiment.
As with minor labs, your notebook entries will be graded before you leave the lab
that day. The Theory portion of the major lab will be due two to three days following
the lab and will be graded separately.
Evaluation: The lab is 25% of the total course grade. However, you must pass the lab section to pass
the course. The number of items to be graded will include the following:
5 pre-labs 10 pts each* 50 points
7 minor notebook/reports 10 pts each* 70 points
3 major notebook/reports 20 pts each* 60 points
1 final project 70 points
*10% reduction each day the pre-lab or notebook is late.
* Lab Preparation, Safety, Technique and Clarity will also be evaluated within each rubric.

  • Lab Preparation, Safety, Technique and Clarity will also be evaluated within each rubric.

Safety: You are expected to follow all safety expectations described in the lab manual (page 5).

A. Safety or prescription glasses with side shields must be worn during the entire lab period. After the first session, students will not be permitted to remain in the laboratory without eye protection. Contact lenses should not be worn during the lab period. B. Shoes or sneakers must be worn in the laboratory. Sandals or partial coverings of the feet are forbidden. It is strongly recommended to avoid wearing shorts in the lab. Students are urged to wear aprons to protect their clothing. Tray to refrain from wearing your “best” cloths to lab. C. You are responsible for knowing where and how to operate the following safety equipment: a. Fire extinguisher c. Fire blanket b. Safety shower d. Eyewash station D. Every accident must be reported to the instructor immediately! E. Safety will be reflected in your grade. You will be required to read and sign a Laboratory Safety Rules Agreement.

Notebook Format: The notebook should include the following with additional detail provided in the Laboratory Manual pp. 1-4, and the Supplemental Handout, “The Chemistry Lab Notebook”.

 Your name, course number, lab section and meeting time.  Table of contents on first 2-3 pages with full pagination of the notebook.  All information recorded legibly in permanent ink with the Sections: Introduction/ Purpose, Materials, Procedure, Observations/Physical Data (including Calculations, Graphs, Tables), Results/Error Analysis/Conclusion, clearly labeled and written neatly in error-free English.  Completion of work should be initialed, dated and witnessed.  Corrections should be made by drawing a single line through the error and then initialing and dating - do not destroy data or use White Out or remove pages. Use a

Z to fill in any half-empty pages left after you complete notebook entries.

Clarity: Neatness will be reflected in your grade. Bad handwriting, sloppy data organization, lack of attention to detail is bad. It will be used against you – not only in this setting but in the future if you obtain a job that requires data management. People equate sloppy notebooks with sloppy work. That’s just the way it is. Take the time to write complete sentences with correct spelling and sensible punctuation. Keep it brief. Lab reports will not be accepted and be given a zero (0) if delivered in objectionable condition.
