Unit I Study Guide for Test 1
To prepare for your test use the Unit I notes, assigned Unit I textbook chapter readings, and
answer the question on the study guide. The study guide will be a useful tool as you take your
test!
The test will cover Chapters 1, 3 (pp. 86-99), and 7, plus Unit lecture notes and pwerpoints. It will
consist of 25 questions worth 2 points each. You will have 60 minutes to complete the test. You
are allowed only one attempt. While taking the test you are not allowed to close out of the test
and return to it at a later time, nor are you allowed to go back to a previous question. Attempting
to do either of these will lock you out of the test. So be sure of your answer before you select.
1. Define job, career, and occupation and know examples. (Ch. 1)
2. Define the 3 approaches to occupational choice. (Ch. 1) Which is the one we use in CPL 104?
3. What are the 8 steps of the career decision-making process discussed in Ch. 1?
4. What is the difference between a structured career theory and a process theory? Which of the
career theorists discussed in class would be classified as a structured theorist and which would be
a process theorist?
5. Anne Roe’s theory of occupational choice: (Ch. 1)
What is the basic premise of Roe’s theory?
What are the main groups of occupations (categories) identified by Roe and which ones
would be considered person-oriented and non-person oriented occupations?
6. Donald Super’s Theory (Ch. 1)
What are the 5 stages of his theory and what occurs in each?
What does Super mean by a vocational self-concept?
7. Frank Parsons Theory (class notes)
What are the three components of his theory? (Remember that the CPL course is built on
Parsons’ theory!)
8. John Krumboltz’s Theory
What are the four types of influences on making career decisions?
What is meant by “planned happenstance”?
9. Define synthesizing.
10. John Holland’s Theory
What are the 6 personality types with characteristics of each?
What are the 6 work environments with examples of occupations?
What are the rules for interpreting the hexagon?
What is meant by the terms congruence and incongruence according to Holland’s theory?
11. Define the terms netiquette and flaming.
12. Definition of a value.
13. Louis Rath's 7 Step Valuing Process
14. How are values communicated to us?
15. Examples of work values (SIGI3 work values).
Good Luck!
