RE 690 – Market Analysis for Real Estate
Fall 2005
Case Study 1
Dr. Stanley D. Longhofer
MW 9:30-10:45
You are a market research analyst for REMR, Inc. and you have been contracted to
prepare a market study evaluating the market potential for an assisted living facility in the
Wichita MSA. This study needs to provide an estimate of the total demand for different
types of assisted living space in the Wichita metropolitan area, the supply of existing and
prospective assisted living facilities, and a recommendation about whether the market can
support a new facility, what type of facility it should be, how large it should be, and
where it should be located.
We will work on this case study in three steps and with each you will need to turn in an
assignment.
1. Market defining story writeup – On Monday, September 26 we will begin
brainstorming ideas for potential data sources that would help us in our research.
To prepare for this, prepare a one- to two-page market defining story writeup.
This can be fairly informal, but should be typewritten. This market defining
story should answer the questions outlined in our e-book.
2. Preliminary research notes – On Monday, October 10 will discuss what we have
learned from our preliminary research. Ideally, you will have a rough draft of
your report at this time with preliminary estimates of both market supply and
demand. You should bring detailed notes or a preliminary research report with
you to class to turn in.
3. Final reports Your final report will be due on Wednesday, October 19.
Although you will not be asked to prepare a formal presentation of your report,
you should be prepared to discuss your conclusions in class.
