Create Professional Websites

By UGN Info Manager

W

ebsitePainter, the editor for creating professional websites has just been released in version 1.5, for both Mac OS X and Windows: This release adds support for external CSS styles, Quicktime and Youtube videos, the HTML 5 audio component, improved FTP upload, and german language interface translation. Also included are two new free website templates.

WebsitePainter is a web editor for creating professional looking websites, without HTML knowledge and programming. With a few clicks it is possible to create webpages with elements like Web2.0 buttons, gradients, round borders, hover effects, transparencies, continuous text and more. It includes a great variety of templates and supports important Web standards such as HTML 5, CSS, PHP and ASP.

This release 1.5 now makes the generated HTML code much more cleaner and smaller, since all CSS styles now can be placed into external style sheet files. The unicode support also has been improved so that sites served by webservers configurated to send an incorrect content type will still appear correctly on the end users browser.

WebsitePainter has built-in support for dynamic HTML content, for example to create a dynamic SlideShow with a list of images which will fade in and out at an adjustable speed. The editor supports pixel perfect layouting, allowing to place all elements of the Website exactly where they should be, by simply clicking and moving them. But as opposed to other website editors, Website painter does not only support absolute layouting of websites, but is also able to create dynamically sized elements.

WebsitePainter is not limited to creating HTML pages, it can also be used to create PHP, ASP and other pages. Additionally, one has full control over the generated

HTML code with the integrated HTML editor, which makes it possible to add styles, JavaScript code and additional attributes to any html tag in the site. WebsitePainter supports Unicode, meaning it is possible to create Websites in any language, be it English, German, Korean, Chinese, Russian or Japanese.

WebsitePainter 1.5 is available at 39 Euro for a single license and at 99 Euro for a company wide license. For existing users, an update to this new version is free. For more information please visit Ambiera online. Category: Graphics & Design, Photography, Art, Video

USE YOUR MAC TO UPDATE YOUR GPS

By Irv Haas - The Review Guru

T

hinking about buying that new GPS (Global Positioning System) device now that prices have come down? While many GPS units were priced at the $200-400 range just 3 years ago, you can now find them in the $100-$200 range, with many units priced under $100.

Portable or Built In?

Many newer automobiles feature built-in GPS devices. So why buy a portable unit? Flexibility is the key answer. If you use more than one car or rent frequently, a portable GPS is easy to swap. Just remove the unit and take it to the second vehicle and plug into the cigarette lighter socket.

The second reason to prefer a portable unit is the cost. While the average cost for a new GPS unit is around $150, a built-in GPS can cost around $2000. Of course, the built-in model looks neater with no extruding wires—but at what cost?

For many users wishing to purchase a GPS device for their automobiles or elsewhere, they may have been reluctant to do so not only due to the cost but also due to the lack of Mac support. With Garmin AND TomTom products that support has changed.

Up to new, GPS products could only be updated on Windows machines. So if you had a Mac, you could only use your GPS device with the software installed

and not be able to upgrade short of buying another GPS. Traffic Updates or Not?

The 3 manufacturers offer the capability to add traffic updates to your GPS for an extra $20. This is in the form of a different power cable that receives traffic information. Keep in mind that with traffic info, you will also be adding advertising pop ups, but only when your car is not moving.

3 Major Manufacturers

There are currently 3 major GPS manufacturers: Garmin, TomTom and Magellan.

Although features are similar among the 3 brands, they are not the same for updating maps and firmware.

Keep in mind that only Garmin and TomTom offer Mac compatibility for downloads.

TomTom’s Downloads

You need to visit TomTom’s web site to update your maps. Here is TomTom’s site for downloading:

REVIEW: HP Photosmart 5514

By Irv Haas - The Review Guru

I

f you’ve been undecided on whether you want a basic printer, a wireless printer, duplex printer, copier, scanner, e-printer or a value printer, consider the HP Photosmart 5514 e-All-in-One.

All of these features can be found in previous printers we have reviewed. But what makes the Photosmart 5514 so remarkable is that all of the above features can be had for under $100. List price is $129.99. If you don’t need duplex printing, consider the HP Photosmart 5510 for $30 less.

With such a small footprint, this multifunction is ideal for college students who desire a wireless small printer to fit perfectly in a small dorm room. Its height is less than 6 inches. For families with multiple computers, having a wireless printer means you can place it anywhere in the house for everyone to share.

The Photosmart 5514 also features HP’s new e-print technology that lets you print to your printer anywhere in the world from your iPhone, iPad, iPod or other device that can send an email with an attachment.

Although this printer lists for $129.99, discounts are widespread. If you can find online coupons, you can easily pick up this printer for $80-90, a steal considering all the features included.

Print Speed

The Photosmart 5514 can handle most multifunction tasks, just don’t expect miracles when compared to more expensive all-in-ones. That said, it performs admirably. Print speed is rated at up to 22 ppm for black and 21 ppm for color, certainly no slouch in the speed department.

I compared the HP Officejet6500 Wireless All-in-One and the HP LaserJet CP2025 with the Photosmart 5514 and minor speed differences that were not there even a few years ago.

For actual speeds, check out this table:

Copy Function

Like more expensive multifunction printers, this device also lets you make copies via a flat bed. Just put your original on the glass and your copies come out in seconds. Maximum number of copies is 50. This is definitely not a higher-end copier!

Installation

Installation was a breeze. After installing the 4 ink cartridges, I had to print out an alignment page that took 3-1/2 minutes.

Then I needed to set up the wireless connection. HP makes this step quite simple: just follow the prompts on the LCD screen. The 5514 looks for your network and when it finds it, it asks you for your passcode. That’s it! Many other manufacturers require you to temporarily install a USB cable to your Mac or PC until it finds your network. But not the HP 5514!!

You then can visit the Print and Fax section of System Preferences and manually add the 5514. You’re now ready to print!

For complete setup, HP suggests you install the included CD. This step is important only if you want to monitor printer settings and use HP’s own software.

Photosmart 5514 Officejet 6500 Wi-Fi LaserJet CP2025dn 1-Page Internet 27 sec. 28 sec. 29 sec. 3-pg. Filemaker 43 sec. 49 sec. 27 sec. 8x10 color graphic 42 sec. 22 sec. 30 sec. MSRP $129.99 $149.99 $499.

Duplex Printing

One of the best features of the Photosmart 5514 is its duplex printing capability. This technology lets you automatically print on both sides of a sheet of paper. If you do a lot of printing, this could be an economic factor in saving on paper costs. The Photosmart 5510 does not offer duplex printing, but the cost difference is minimal.

Print Evaluation

I compared the 3 printers (above) in my test. The Photosmart 5514 and 6500 Wireless had similar print quality. Upon closer examination, the 5514 offered better color highlights. The 6500 looked slightly darker. The LaserJet CP2025 had the sharpest and clearest printing of text than the other two. But for color photos, use an inkjet; don’t count on a laser printer. When comparing also keep prices in mind!

Photo Capabilities

One of the most common features found on newer printers is the memory card slots. The Photosmart Photosmart 5514 includes them as well even with its low price point.

Memory card support includes: Memory Stick; Memory Stick Duo; Secure Digital/MultimediaCard; Secure Digital High Capacity Card; and xD-Picture Card.

The Photosmart 5514 also lets you do borderless printing up to 8.5 x 11 in.

HP’s software gives you HP Red-eye Removal, HP Photo Brightening and HP Smart Focus. These are software enhancements that are included with the printer.
