Standards of txtuality
All well formed text (or their translation) must meet several standards of textuality in order to be
considered as communicative. These standards are :
Cohesion sublemes the diverse relations which transparently hold among the words, phrases and
sentences.
Coherence taps a variety of conceptual resources, ensuring that meanings are related discernibly.
Situationality is a cover term for the way utterances relate to situations.
Informativity is the exent to which a text or part of a text may be expected or unexpected, thus
exhibiting various degrees of dynamism.
Intentionality is reflected in the text producer’s intention of the text.
Acceptability means that the text is purposeful and that it functions in a particular way to serve
the purposes which it is intended.
Intertextuality ensures that texts or part of texts link up in meaningful ways with other texts.
Markedness
Markedness refers to the way words are changed or added to give a special meaning. There are
two types of words, marked and unmarked. The unmarked form when is the arrangement of
words and sentences take preferred or expected form and marked form is the arrangement of
words and sentences take unfamiliar and unexpected form.
Text-based information
Text-based information is all information that can be found in a text and it focuses on form or
context which present in the text. Reading research suggested that, as the reading process gets
underway, there would be more reliance on information supplied by the text and less on reliance
on information supplied by the reader.
