TERM 1
DEFINITION 1
TERM 2
DEFINITION 2 We have all heard of climate change, whether it was through the news, snap chat or even Greta Thunberg for some of us. But what I dont think that we have done is really stopped to think about is how climate change is affecting our environment and more specifically our fire season. Climate change is affecting our fires by increasing the length of the fire season. TERM 3
DEFINITION 3 Equally, it is affecting the size of the area burnt and it is also affecting the number of wildfire Australia is having. Essentially this means when fires breakout they are going to expand faster and burn more area as they move in unpredictable ways and leave devastating effects. Some demonstration of these fires are Black Friday and Black Saturday or closer to home the Wye river Christmas day bush fires or more recently the mega blaze that took over NSW and parts of Victoria. TERM 4
DEFINITION 4 Since 1905 there has been 544 deaths that have been caused by bushfires in Australia and that number is only growing, there has been over 13 million hectares of land burnt and in the past five years there has been a total of 583 houses lost and that number is only a fraction of the damages and effects of the bushfires. I know that all these effects couldnt all be eliminated but they could defiantly be reduced significantly. If the government, simply did more cool climate burns which is simply a preventative measure that could help future control over out of control bushfires. TERM 5
DEFINITION 5 Another reason why the government should be doing more cool climate burns is that as a result of the intense smoke and air pollution that has originated from the fires, Canberra had the worst air quality compared to any other major city in the world. It is not well known but bushfires and wildfires can produce fine particle air pollution which directly threatens human health. This is when very small particles like dust, pollen and smoke enter deep into our lungs which can cause irritation our the airways like coughing and difficulty breathing and this can happen in a matter of seconds.
TERM 6
DEFINITION 6
TERM 7
DEFINITION 7 Intense smoke inhalation is the main killer when it comes to fires killing 50 to 80% of its victims. According the world health organisation everyone is at a slight risk of being affected by fine motor air pollution and smoke inhalation, but children and older people are at a slightly higher risk of dying from it. So why not do cool climate burns it just doesnt make any sense not to. TERM 8
DEFINITION 8 Lastly the ongoing biodiversity impacts bushfires are having on our environment. After the initial devastation of the fires the effects are continuing. And estimated billion animals have perished and many more are still expected to die due to the loss of habitat and food sources. This lose is part of a much bigger picture of a world where biodiversity is in a steep decline. Basically, this means that we are losing wildlife at an even increasing rate across not only Australia but the whole planet. TERM 9
DEFINITION 9 Which impacts our ecosystems essential for our own food production. The worlds terrestrial biodiversity is concentrated in forests, they are home to more than 80% of all terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects. So essentially when forests burn, the biodiversity on which humans depend on for their long-term survival also disappears in the inferno. With over 1 million species already facing extinction if we continue with our business as usual. Extreme fires like the ones earlier are becoming an increasing matter of concern for all species survival. TERM 10
DEFINITION 10 To put it simply, cool climate burns way out do the benefit rather than disadvantage to Australia. Everyone health is always going to be our number one priority. Cool climate burns are going to prevent the out spread of fires to an uncontrollable state, they are going to prevent the amount of smoke in the air therefore less people are going to become ill and they are going to stop the mass killing of innocent animals in the Australian environment. The climate is not going to help us so lets help ourselves. Having planned burns in seasons where we can control them better just makes sense so why not?
