Anatomical Terms: Bone Projections and Their Definitions, Lab Reports of Biology

Definitions and examples of various anatomical terms related to bone projections, including foramen, fossa, process, condyle, sinus, protuberance, coronoid, coracoid, trochlea, and tuberosity. The document also includes a quiz to help students match the definitions with the corresponding terms.

SOME ANATOMICAL PROJECTION TERMS
If you picture in your mind the meaning of each word, it will be easier to identify some bones’
projections:
FORAMEN: Opening, orifice.
Optic Foramen, foramen rotundum, foramen ovale, foramen
Spinosum, foramen lacerum, internal auditory canal, jugular
Foramen, hypoglossal canal and foramen Magnum.
FOSSA: A shallow depression.
FOVEA: A pit or cuplike depression.
PROCESS: A projection or outgrowth of bone or tissue
CONDYLE: A rounded protuberance at the end of a bone forming an
Articulation.
SINUS: A cavity within a bone
PROTUBERANCE: A part that is prominent beyond a surface (bulge)
CORONOID: Shaped like a crown, curved.
CORACOID: Shaped like a crow’s beak.
TROCHLEA: Ring or hook through which a tendon or muscle projects.
TUBEROSITY: An elevated round process of a bone or nodule.
Try to identify these 4 projections. Some of these words apply to different bones
Carotid Canal: Skull, inferior view, through which carotid arteries enters to supply
Head.
Coronoid Process: Identify one for the mandible and another for the ulna.
Conoid Tubercle: Clavicle
Coracoid Process: Scapula.

Study Aide for Skeletal System 1 – Bone Markings Angular extension of a bone relative to the rest of the structure R Any marked bony prominence P Cavity or hollow space in a bone S Flattened, or shallow depression F Large, rough projection T Large, smooth rounded articulating oval structure C Low ridge L Massive, rough projection found only on the femur T Narrow groove S Narrow, slit like opening through a bone F Opening to a canal M Passageway through a bone C Pointed, slender process S Projection adjacent to a condyle E Prominent, rounded epiphysis H Rounded passageway through a bone F Small, round projection T I found when I was taking Anatomy what helped me best learn was knowing the definitions of the words I was trying to find. Match the definitions with the words below.

  1. Opening to a canal-like passageway. _____
  2. Rounded articular projection. _____
  3. Special types of short bones formed in tendons. _____
  4. Canal leading to the eardrum and middle ear. _____
