Introduction

Bullying is an aggressive behavior and tactic used to dominate and hurt others. It involves coercion, use of force, teasing, abuse, and threats. Bullying occurs at home, school, in the playground and online through cyberbullying. Bullying promotes an imbalance of power (Armitage 2021). A group of five members were used to form a team to raise awareness on social media about bullying and its effects. They analyzed bullying from a wide range of perspective. Social media was the main tool to promote awareness on anti-bullying.

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Mental health problems Social Media Awareness
  1. Instagram www.instagram.com Instagram is a good social media platform to raise awareness on bullying. It contains a feature whereby one can report instances of bullying. The platform allows for the creation of collages and uploading images for anti-bullying. The team through Jannie Tarkowski created an anti- bullying campaign for one month. The response was positive in the comment section of the anti-bullying messages.
  2. Facebook www.facebook.com The Facebook page created to push the anti-bullying campaign was successful. There were 15 posts on a one-month period. Each post averaged 500 likes and 100 comments. There was an average of 20 shares per post. The Facebook posts spurred a conversation online with comments on how to tackle and stop bullying a majority. There were also counselling and engagement with mental health professionals on bullying.
  3. Twitter www.twitter.com Twitter was less successful. It was less effective to spur a conversation and promote awareness on bullying. However, there were two posts per day with a total of 60 posts for the

30 - day awareness program. There was an average of 20 views per post. We were forced to jump on to trending topics on twitter which enabled us to increase engagement in the last 10 days of the awareness program. 4) YouTube www.youtube.com YouTube entailed posting videos on how to recognize bullying and ways to deal with bullying both online and in the physical environment. Due to the rigorous process of recording and editing videos, only four videos were posted, one video per week. The campaign was also less successful with each video averaging less than 100 views.
