Overview Publishers and college bookstores make a lot of money reselling used books. At some colleges, students use bulletin boards to post ads so they can sell their used books directly to a student. Typically, the seller can get more money through a direct sale than selling it back to the book store. In addition, the buyer usually pays less through a direct sale than buying a used book from the bookstore. Have you ever bought a used book directly from another student or sold a used book to a fellow student? How did you find each other? Share your experience with the class. When a new edition of a text book is published, the publisher will refuse to sell the old edition. Thus, professors must adopt the new edition. However, many professors would be content to use the old edition for several years, especially in courses where the material doesn’t change. Students and professors alike could benefit from a formal system that facilitates the direct sale of used books There are several different traditional ways to facilitate person to person sale of used books? What are they? There are several ways to do it over the Internet. What are those ways? Take a moment to introduce yourself to your neighbor, and try to come up with a list of traditional and technological ways to facilitate person to person sale of used books? Ways
The Internet is an obvious tool that could be used to facilitate the sale of used books, but there are several problems and challenges that arise. What are some of those challenges and problems. Again try to come up with a list of problems and challenges with trying to use the Internet to facilitate the exchange of used books. Problems and Challenges
Scenario Imagine if you wanted to set up a used book exchange at Siena, but the college would not help you, i.e., they would not give you bulletin board space in the student union and they would not give you access to setup a website on campus. However, imagine that you could setup a book exchange website off campus (via Yahoo). How could you spread the word and advertise your website on campus? Again, talk to your neighbor and jot down some of your ideas:
Project B General Description (details will follow) If you choose this project, you will work in groups of size 3 or 4. Two, groups can select this project option. Each group will have a team leader that is responsible for delegating work and coordinating meetings. In addition, each group should have a technical leader and a marketing leader. Your main goal is to design and develop an Internet-based solution for facilitating person to person used book exchange. Part I – Research Are there websites that are already doing this? What are they doing? What is the scope and scale of the website? How do they make money off of their work? What kind of resources could facilitate this project? E-bay, Pay Pal, Bulletin Boards, Yahoo Groups, etc. How do you setup a website? What are the costs? What kind of technology will we need? What will it cost? What skills do we need to develop? Can we do this alone? What kind of technical knowledge will be required? Part II – The Plan Develop a feasible plan for creating a used-book exchange for Siena. How will students find out about it? How will you overcome some of the challenges? What kind of technologies will be needed? What kind of expertise will be required? How exactly will you support the cost or make money? Part III – Development In lab, we are going to learn basic skills for setting up a website, creating web pages, creating forms, linking the forms to a database, and processing information. By November, you will create a complete and functional website on the CS department web server. Part IV – Deployment We are going to investigate affordable ways to actually deploy the website professionally. We will investigate options and issues regarding domain name registration and website hosting. All of the teams will work together to create a finished website, and we will try to secure funds to actually register a domain and host the site remotely.
