gender group

gender also creates dominant and subordinate groups. Males are the social majority females, though numerous, are relegated to the position of the social minority, a subordinate status. Women are considered a minority even though they do not exhibit all of the characteristics of a minority group. Women may encounter prejudice and discrimination and are physically distinguishable. Group membership is involuntary and many women have developed a sense of sisterhood. TERM 7

LGBT group

DEFINITION 7 members associated with homosexuality are viewed as a minority due to the majority of the population being hetrosexual. This is a civil rights group due to the emergence of a large number of the group. TERM 8

the development of solidarity between ethnic subgroups - such as Hispanic or Asian Americans. TERM 22

marginality

DEFINITION 22 the status of being between two cultures at the same time, such as a person whose mother is Jewish and father is a Christian. Also known as double consciousness. TERM 23

DEFINITION 24 the Federal government dealt with the Native Americans through treaties aimed at dispossessing of their lands; the Federal government's relations with Native Americans were handled by the Secretary of War and the War Department TERM 25

DEFINITION 25 Elimination of reservation system, ends medical coverage, tax immunity, schools, and college scholarships.
