Exercise 14 Sample answer My home town is Gouda, in Holland. It’s a great place to live because there is so much to do. A lot of students who attend Leiden University live here because it has really good, cafés, parks and museums. This summer has been very warm and sunny so I’ve been enjoying hanging out with my friends in Queen’s Gardens. We play football and frisbee, have barbeques and chat. Last weekend we went to Gouda Cheese Market, which is a famous landmark in the area, and it’s a great place to visit. They were having a festival and there were fireworks at night. It was amazing. Every year in Gouda there’s a music festival in the main square. It’s an event where people sell food, drinks, clothes and books. There are bands playing and sometimes comedians perform. It’s a fantastic day when the weather is good but awful if it rains.

Hi Louie, how’s it going?

Sorry I haven't been in touch for a couple of

months. I was thinking that we haven’t got

together for ages and I was wondering if you

wanted to meet up.

The Grand Prix is on next Saturday and I’ve

asked some friends if they want to come over to

my place to watch it. It would be great if you could

come too. I’m going to cook some food on the

barbecue to eat after the race if the weather is

nice.

If you do fancy coming, let me know as soon as

possible because I need to make sure I have

enough food and plates for everyone. You're

welcome to bring a friend or two as well.

By the way, Carrie will be here and I know she’d

love to see you. She always asks how you are.

I really hope you can come.

Speak soon!

Hans

Sample answer Dear Sir / Madam I am writing to ask for more information about the job you have advertised in this week’s Weekly Journal. The advertisement was for a security guard at your factory in the north of the city. I have been working in the security industry for five years and before that I was a police officer. Security is an industry which I am very interested in. However, I would like to find out a little more about the position first. Could you let me know what the working hours are? Your advertisement says evenings but doesn't say exactly what times. Would I also be required to work weekends? I would also like to know if I would need to wear a uniform. If I do need one, is it provided by the company or

Sample answer Were people really happier in the past? People often say this, but is it really true? Let's look at people's lives fifty years ago compared to today. Life was certainly simpler back then. There was less choice when people went shopping so it was easier to make decisions about what to buy. People also expected to make very simple decisions about their lives. For example, men and women got married young. Then the man went to work while the woman stayed at home to look after the children. However, just because life was simpler, it doesn't mean people were happier. Most shoppers now enjoy having

go home, he stayed. He was given some work on a fishing boat which went to France, and then travelled around Europe. He had many different jobs. Then one day he met my grandmother at a festival in Spain. They got married and bought a house in the mountains where he started a hiking business. Spain had just become popular as a tourist destination. As a result, the business did very well. He’s retired now, but he still lives in Spain. I’ve learned a lot from my grandfather, he’s taught me to make the most of every opportunity in life.
