The role of film as a means of communication and entertainment. It explores the different types of films and genres, and how they are influenced by the needs of the audience market. The document also delves into the research methods used to study film, particularly qualitative research, and how it enriches the results of quantifiable research. The researcher is a key instrument in qualitative research, and data collection tools include direct observation, interviews, and document studies. The emphasis is on meaning and value-bound rather than generalizations.

Film is one of the many forms of mass media that are able to provide entertainment value to the public when the fatigue of community activities in carrying out the routine of daily life. Film acts as a means of communication used to spread entertainment that presents stories, events, music, drama, humor and other technical presentations to the general public (Sumarno, 1996: 13). Film is often used as a socialization tool or as a medium to construct certain discourses for public consciousness. Film is the actualization of the development of people's lives in its time. From time to time films have developed, both from the technology used and the themes raised. After all, the film has captured a number of cultural elements behind it. In the setting of industrial society, the development of films that are circulated is largely influenced by the needs of the audience market, where the themes raised in films are not far from stories that revolve around populist problems. The setting of the populist film theme cannot be separated from the spirit of the industry that demands the appeal of as many audiences as possible, so it is not uncommon for some story themes of industrial films to have a story spirit that is easily digested by the audience, and does not heed ethical and conflict issues that require a lot of reason or knowledge that is difficult to digest. Film as a medium of communication, is a combination of efforts to convey verbal and non-verbal messages through moving images, with the use of camera technology, color and sound where these elements are backgrounded by the director to the film audience or in other words film is a communication medium that carries a content of messages to the audience to provide new discourse with various meanings that filmmakers want to convey to the public, because with the existence of film media the form of communication described can be carried out in depth and
includes elements of communication, namely body language, facial expressions and intonation selection. Basically, films are divided into two groups, namely the category of story films and non-story films (fiction films). A story film is the telling of a story or idea, with the help of images, motion and sound while a non-story film is a category of films that use reality as the subject. Story films have different types or genres. In this case, a genre is defined as a type of film that is characterized by a certain style, form or content. There are so-called drama films, horror films, comedies, documentaries and children's films (Marseli, 1996:10-11).

RESEARCH METHOD This research uses a qualitative research approach where qualitative research as a scientific method is often used and implemented by a group of researchers in the field of social sciences, including education. A number of reasons are also put forward, the essence of which is that qualitative research enriches the results of quantifiable research. Qualitative research is carried out to build knowledge through understanding and discovery. A qualitative research approach is a process of research and understanding based on methods that investigate a social phenomenon and a human problem. In this study, the researcher made a complex picture, examined the words, detailed reports from the respondents' parents and conducted a study on the natural situation. Qualitative research is carried out on natural conditions and is discovery. In qualitative research, the researcher is a key instrument. Therefore, researchers must have the provision of theory and broad insight so that they can ask, analyze and construct the object under study to be clearer. This research puts more emphasis on meaning and value-bound. Qualitative research where the role of the researcher is as a key instrument in collecting data, and interpreting data. Data collection tools usually use direct observation, interviews, document studies. While the validity and reliability of data using triangulation using inductive methods, the results of qualitative research emphasize meaning rather than generalizations.
