Answer the following questions:
1. Did you already have a “Plan B” for your career before you started this assignment?
If so, what was it?
I did not have a set “Plan B” for my career before beginning this assignment. I will have my BS
in HSMT in the spring as well as my RN licensure in the following spring, so I will have
multiple doors for me to access if I am willing to put in the work. I desire to work in quality
management for healthcare on day, but I never truly had another career set other than nursing
and quality.
2. Which “Plan B” career from the list above did you select? (Your “Plan B” MUST come from
the list of “Plan B” careers in the instructions for this assignment)
Respiratory Therapist
3. Were you aware that your “Plan B” career existed before you started this assignment?
Yes, in the hospital where I am interning it has been difficult for them to find a respiratory therapist to
sign on and commit to their organization due to competitive wages.
4. Provide a description of the work someone employed in your “Plan B” career performs. Be
sure to include information from textbook but do not copy paste. Use your own words.
Respiratory therapists work in a wide variety of patient care settings, and are responsible for
helping people with sleep disorders and chronic respiratory diseases.
5. Why is an understanding of microbiology important to someone employed in your “Plan B”
career?
Microbiology is essential for any healthcare career, and respiratory therapy is no exception.
Being as this career is focused on all things breathing and diseases in that inhibit such,
microbiology is essential. Inflammation of mucus membranes are the common factors in
bronchitis, epiglottitis, laryngitis, and many others. Microbes cause infections, which cause
major problems. Everything human is microbiology, and healing/curing health problems is
determined by how the human body responds to treatment.
6. Why did your “Plan B” career appeal to you?
Respiratory Therapy appealed to me because breathing is not only an essential part of living, but also
essential to comfort and mental stability. This career also requires hands on skills with patients, which I
love, but with focus on a set area rather than the entire human body and all functions.
7. What are the education requirements for your “Plan B” career?
