Question 1 a) You are in charge of organizing a conference for the Energy Society. You have reserved a venue that has seating for 75 people and have agreement from several key note speakers. i. Develop a scope statement for this project. Assume that the event will occur in 4 weeks’ time and provide your best guess estimate of the titles and corresponding dates for the key milestones. (10 marks) ii. What would the priorities be for this project? (5 marks) b) Develop a work breakdown structure (WBS) for a project in which you are going to build a bicycle. Try to identify all the major components and provide three levels of details. (10 marks) Question 2 a) Why are accurate estimates critical to effective project management? (8 marks) b) How does the culture of an organization influence the quality of estimates? (7 marks) c) What are the differences between bottom up and top down estimating approaches? Under what conditions would you prefer one over the other? (10 marks) Question 3 You are president of Cormican Construction which specializes in building high quality customized homes in Galway. You have just been hired by the Fergusons to build their dream home. You operate as a general contractor and employ only a part time book keeper. You subcontract work to local trade professionals. Housing construction in Galway is booming. You are tentatively scheduled to complete 11 houses this year. You have promised the Fergusons that the final cost will range from €450,000 to €500,000 and that it will take 5 months to complete the house. The Fergusons are willing to have the project delayed in order to save costs. Project objective To construct a high quality custom home within 5 months at a cost not to exceed €500, Deliverables A 2,500 square foot, 2 bathroom, 4 bedroom finished home A finished and insulated garage Kitchen appliances to include double oven with grill, microwave and dishwasher High efficiency gas boiler with programmable thermostat Milestones Permits approved by September 5 Foundations poured by September 12 First fix plumbing electrical and mechanical inspections passed by November 7 Final inspection by January 7
