Research Paper Guidelines for Psyc 2003 General Psychology Instructor: Dean-Weir, Lyndall
Writing Style: The paper may be written using either APA or MLA writing style. Online assistance is available for both the APA and the MLA writing styles by going to the NWACC website, then to the library homepage, and then clicking on Citation Formats and/or the Information Literacy Lab. Also, for the APA writing style , a copy of the Publication Guidelines of the American Psychological Association, 5th^ edition is available in the reference section of the NWACC library. Topic of Paper: You may choose a topic from the field of psychology which you find interesting. You will need to advise the instructor of the topic when you turn in the project homework. Typing/printing: Research papers must be typed or word processed. Printing or typing should appear on only one side of white paper. Double-Spacing: Use double-spacing between all the lines of your research paper. Rough Draft: You will need to turn in a rough draft of the paper along with the completed research paper. You must have a minimum of seven pages :
1. Title Page: Centered on one sheet of paper type first the title of the paper, then your name, next the course title, and lastly the date or the semester, such as Spring Semester 2005. Remember to use double-spacing between the lines on the title page also. 2. Body of Paper: The body of your paper must be a minimum of five full pages double-spaced. Please do not use larger than a size 12 font in the body of the paper. 3. References (APA) page or Works Cited (MLA) page: The reference page should be done according to the writing style chosen. All printed lines on the reference page should be double-spaced. A minimum of five reference sources must be used to write the paper. The manner in which the particular type of reference source needs to be listed on the References or Works Cited page will be determined by the writing style employed to write the paper. Reference sources may be journal articles, books, videos, online sources, etc.; illustrative examples will be given by the writing style about the correct way to list each different type of reference. Online references are listed according the type of online source which is used and as technological sources change, so do the academic methods of listing these sources. If given, the (1) date of last update of particular internet material should be listed in the reference listing for that source as well as the (2) date you accessed the material from the internet. The specifics of online sources differ, so that you must consult the writing style for correct instructions for each situation.

4. Document specific information within the body of the paper: Using the appropriate method for the writing style chosen indicate in the body of the paper from which of the reference listings on the References or Works Cited page specific information was taken. Types of information which should be cited in the body of the paper includes directly quoted material, statistical data, information presented as factual, historical data, and scientific/research studies. Grammar and Spelling : Avoid errors in spelling and grammar in your paper as points will be deducted for these mistakes if noted.
