You must answer 3 questions in Section B, at least one of which must be from each subsection. All questions are worth equal marks. This section is worth 50% of the marks.
Subsection 1
- Define the term “Biotechnology”, illustrating your definition using one historical and one contemporary example.
- Describe the process of RNA synthesis, using diagrams to illustrate your answer.
- Compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic protein expression systems in terms of their advantages and disadvantages.
- Describe the technique of Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and discuss applications of PCR in biotechnology.
Subsection 2
- Give an example of a microbial reporter gene and explain its biotechnological use.
- Describe the two main types of forensic DNA testing and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each technique.
- Give examples of viruses that can be used as delivery vectors in gene therapy and discuss the properties that make a virus as good vector.
