Chapter 6. CULTURES AROUND THE WORLD
PART 1
Nouns
-Architecture: the design or style of a building or buildings
-Cathedrals: the main church of a district, under the care of a bishop
-Civilization: a society, its culture and its way of life during a particular period of time or
in a particular part of the world
-Contradiction: a lack of agreement between facts, opinions, actions, etc.
-Discoveries: an act or the process of finding sth/sb or learning about sth that was not
known before.
-Legacy: money or property that is given to you by sb when they die
-Literature: pieces of writing that are valued as works of art, esp. novels, plays and
poems
-Media: the main ways that large numbers of people receive information and

Verbs
-Agree: to have the same opinion as somebody; to say that you have the same opinion
-Contradict: to say that something that somebody else has said is wrong, and that the
opposite is true
-Describe: to say what somebody/something is like
-Develop: to gradually grow or become bigger, more advanced, stronger, etc.; to make
something do this
-Experience: to have a particular situation affect you or happen to you
-Grinning: to smile widely

PART 1

Nouns

  • Architecture : the design or style of a building or buildings

  • Enthusiastic : feeling or showing a lot of excitement and interest about somebody something
  • Excellent : extremely good
  • Knowing : showing that you know or understand about something that is supposed to be secret
  • Opposing : (of attitudes, views, etc.) very different from each other
  • Pleasant : friendly and polite
  • Proud: causing somebody to feel pride
  • Scientific : involving science; connected with science
  • Social : connected with society and the way it is organized
  • Soft : not loud, and usually pleasant and gentle Adverbs
  • Convincingly : in a way that makes somebody believe that something is true
  • Politely : in a way that shows good manners and respect for the feelings of others

PART 2.

Nouns

  • Attention : the act of listening to, looking at or thinking about something/somebody carefully
  • Bite : a small piece of food that you can bite from a larger piece
  • Customers : a person or an organization that buys something from a shop/store or business
  • Guest : a person that you have invited to your house or to a particular event that you are paying for

Adverbs

  • Backwards: towards a place or position that is behind
  • Patiently : n a way that shows that you are able to wait for a long time or to accept annoying behavior or difficulties without becoming angry
  • Loudly: in a way that makes a lot of noise
  • Rudely: in a way that shows a lack of respect for other people and their feelings

Chapter 7. HEALTH PART 1 Nouns

  • Altitude : a place that is high above sea level
  • An average : calculated by adding several amounts together, finding a total, and dividing the total by the number of amounts
  • Benefits : an advantage that something gives you; a helpful and useful effect that something has
  • Claim s: a statement that something is true although it has not been proved
  • Disease : an illness affecting humans, animals or plants, often caused by infection
  • Environment : the conditions that affect the behaviour and development of somebody/something; the physical conditions that somebody/something exists in
  • Inhabitants : a person or an animal that lives in a particular place
  • Longevity : long life; the fact of lasting a long time
  • Populations : all the people who live in a particular area, city or country; the total number of people who live there
  • Preservatives : a substance used to prevent food or wood from decaying
  • Streams : a small narrow river
  • Stress : pressure or worry caused by the problems in somebody’s life
  • Theories : a formal set of ideas that is intended to explain why something happens or exists
  • Validity : the state of being legally or officially acceptable Verbs
  • Consume : to eat or drink something
  • Cure : to make an illness go away
  • Prevent : to stop somebody from doing something; to stop something from happening
  • Solve : to find the correct answer or explanation for something
  • Theorize : to suggest facts and ideas to explain something; to form a theory or theories about something Adjectives
  • Active : always busy doing things, especially physical activities
  • Available : that you can get, buy or find
  • Senior citizens: an elderly person, especially one who is retired and living on a pension Verbs
  • Correct: to make something right or accurate, for example by changing it or removing mistakes
  • Oppose : to disagree strongly with somebody’s plan, policy, etc. and try to change it or prevent it from succeeding Adjectives
  • Accurate : correct and true in every detail
  • Dishonest : not honest; intending to trick people
  • Elderly : used as a polite word for ‘old’
  • Genetic : connected with genes or genetics
  • Proven : tested and shown to be true
  • Sour : having a taste like that of a lemon or of fruit that is not ready to eat

Chapter 8. ENTERTAINMENT AND THE MEDIA

PART 1

  • Visual media : connected with seeing or sight media
  • Programing : to give a computer, etc. a set of instructions to make it perform a particular task
  • Improve : to become better than before; to make something/somebody better than before
  • Hospital : a large building where people who are ill/sick or injured are given medical treatment and care
  • Nursing : the job or skill of caring for people who are sick or injured
  • Aural : connected with hearing and listening
  • Concentrate : to give all your attention to something and not think about anything else
  • Adult : a fully grown person who is legally responsible for their actions
  • Violence : violent behavior that is intended to hurt or kill somebody
  • Scare : to frighten somebody
  • Viewer : a person watching television
  • Behavior : the way that somebody behaves, especially towards other people
  • Emotional : connected with people’s feelings
  • Star : a famous and excellent singer, performer, sports player, etc.
  • Envy : to wish you had the same qualities, possessions, opportunities, etc. as somebody else
  • Unlimited : as much or as many as is possible; not limited in any way
  • Immoral : not considered to be good or honest by most people
  • Personality : the various aspects of a person’s character that combine to make them different from other people
  • Reality : television/shows, etc. that use real people (not actors) in real situations, presented as entertainment
  • Boring : not interesting; making you feel tired and impatient
  • Addition : the process of adding two or more numbers together to find their total
  • Addicted : spending all your free time doing something because you are so interested in it PART 2

Chapter 9. SOCIAL LIFE

PART 1

  • Spouse : a husband or wife
  • Interview : to talk to somebody and ask them questions at a formal meeting to find out if they are suitable for a job, course of study, etc.
  • Match (v): if two things match, or if one thing matches another, they have the same colour, pattern, or style and therefore look attractive together
  • Match (n): a person or thing that combines well with somebody/something else
  • Sock : a piece of clothing that is worn over the foot, ankle and lower part of the leg, especially inside a shoe
  • Reply : to say or write something as an answer to somebody/something
  • Arrange : to plan or organize something in advance
  • Worried : thinking about unpleasant things that have happened or that might happen and therefore feeling unhappy and afraid
  • Fortunately : by good luck
  • Guy : (informal) a man
  • Aggressive : angry, and behaving in a threatening way; ready to attack
  • Mate : (informal) a friend
  • Enthusiastically : in a way that shows a lot of excitement and interest about somebody/something PART 2
  • Optimistic : expecting good things to happen or something to be successful; showing this feeling
  • Feet : (plural of foot) a unit for measuring length equal to 12 inches or 30.48 centimetres
  • Inch : a unit for measuring length, equal to 2.54 centimetres. There are 12 inches in a foot.

Chapter 10. SPORTS

PART 1.

  • Conflict : a situation in which people, groups or countries are involved in a serious disagreement or argument
  • Demonstration : an act of showing or explaining how something works or is done
  • Coordination : the act of making parts of something, groups of people, etc. work together in an efficient and organized way
  • Competition : a situation in which people or organizations compete with each other for something that not everyone can have
  • Original : existing at the beginning of a particular period, process or activity
  • Competitive : used to describe a situation in which people or organizations compete against each other
  • Extreme : very great in degree
  • Compete : to try to be more successful or better than somebody else who is trying to do the same as you - Achievement : a thing that somebody has done successfully, especially using their own effort and skill
  • Cancel : to decide that something that has been arranged will not now take place
  • Contribute : to give something, especially money or goods, to help somebody/something PART 2
  • Corrupt : (of people) willing to use their power to do dishonest or illegal things in return for money or to get an advantage
  • Ban : to decide or say officially that something is not allowed
  • Fan : a person who admires somebody/something or enjoys watching or listening to somebody/something very much
  • Opposition: the act of strongly disagreeing with somebody/something, especially with the aim of preventing something from happening
  • Profitable: that makes or is likely to make money
  • Intolerable : so bad or difficult that you cannot tolerate it; completely unacceptable
