Pressure Ulcer Prevention and Treatment in Long-Term Care: Findings & Recommendations, Exercises of Research Methods for Managers

Findings- cushions/mattresses, healthcare worker education, and proper skin care are all
attributed to better patient outcomes for older adults in nursing homes with pressure ulcers/at
risk for pressure ulcers
Setting- long term care facility
Project- evaluation of patient’s skin in long term care facilites that are at risk for developing
pressure ulcers/already have them, evaluation of healthcare team members understanding of
pressure ulcer prevention/treatment, assessment of staff adherence, resources available at
faciltiy and resources that can be added to the implementation of educational + treatment
options

Healthcare worker observation- how many times a day were patient’s who are incontinent
have their bed linen changed/briefs changed, were they cleaned appropriately? Was skin
barrier cream applied? Are they being assess/rotated every 2 hours?
Educational program- teaching workers what signs to look for in the devleopment of a
pressure ucler, early prevention including- skin barrier creams, cushions, ect. Teaching
workers proper body alignments, use of pilliows for relief of bony areas. Complications that
can result of untreated pressure ulcers
Additional resources- special mattresses, wound care specialist, wound care resource nurse,
policy guidelines, one specific type of paperwork for assessing skin and wounds
Survey- how comfortable are the healthcare workers about their skills r/t treatment and
prevention of pressure ulcers, were there better patient outcomes after the implementation of
these programs, what other resources would be helpful?
