Thesis:

The 2022 World Cup should not be held in Qatar since it will only bring good things to Qatar but as for the rest of the world it will basically bring problems. Actually, a lot of problems are occurring already…

Background:

The second of December of 2010, Qatar was chosen by the FIFA committee to host the 2022 World Cup. This World Cup will be held in a country where the average temperatures during summer are above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. This forced FIFA to move the tournament to colder months… So, for the first time in history, the FIFA WORLD CUP will be held between November and December.

Main problems:

  • Rescheduling of hundreds of games in countless leagues around the World (especially in the North Hemisphere)
  • Broadcasters and TV networks
  • Violation of Human Rights.
  1. According to the leagues:
  • Main European Leagues and most important UEFA Tournaments will have to reschedule their games. (more than 600 games will be affected).
    • Premier League, La Liga, Ligue1, Bundesliga, Calcio…
  • In the United States the season games are scheduled differently so the regular season games will not be affected by the Qatar World Cup in 2022, but some play- offs games will
  • Plus, playing such a physically demanding competition during the winter may produce injuries in lots of players because after a World Cup players have at least a

month to rest and fully recover their body, but in this case they will have to keep playing their respective league games.

  1. With respect to the Broadcasters and TV companies:
  • In Europe, soccer is the biggest sport and lots of European broadcasters make a big percentage of their income from September to May, when soccer leagues are played. But in 2022, they expected to make a lot of money during the summer out of the World Cup. Now they will have to figure out how to solve this great loss of money
  • But the problem is even bigger for some American TV companies such as Fox or Telemundo (the Spanish-language TV-rights holder in the United States). They fear the tournament will conflict with more premium programming like N.F.L. games.
  1. Finally, according to the Human Rights:
  • On hand, Deplorable labor conditions in Qatar have caused thousands of deaths already and they still cause a death per day. Qatar is such a tiny country and they needed to bring immigrants from other countries, especially from Nepal, India, Pakistan and Philippines. Once these people are in Qatar, their rights as workers, and also as human beings, are taken away due to “kafala”. Kafala is Qatar’s workers’ rights policy and some people have described this policy as a slavery system which workers can’t escape from. Kafala allows companies to keep the immigrants passports for an indefinite period of time so it means that workers can’t go back home even if they don’t want to work in Qatar anymore. And as I said, conditions are deplorable and among other things, workers live in overcrowded rooms and they barely have health care therefore diseases are a continuous problem.
