COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES Catalog Description : Public Health and Nutrition in Developing Areas. An interdisciplinary approach to the problems of health and nutrition with emphasis on Third World countries. Course Objectives : By the end of the course you will… A. Be able to identify current global issues in public health and nutrition, with an emphasis on the United States, the developing world, and the poor in developed nations. B. Understand the transmission, causes, and impact of significant communicable diseases. C. Define possible solutions for major health and nutritional problems. D. Understand principles of community health and community health education. E. Complete a literature review for an area of particular interest in public health and nutrition. F. Gain a biblical understanding of health and disease. II. EXPECTATIONS A. Class attendance and participation is expected. Attendance will be taken each session. Send an email if you anticipate being absent. B. Assignments submitted for Public Health and Nutrition are to be developed specifically for this course and may not have been submitted for another course. C. Late assignments will receive one grade reduction, e.g. A to A-, B+ to B, etc. Simply write “Late Assignment” under your name on any assignment turned in late. Exceptions to the policy include illness in the Student Health Center, serious illness or death in the family, or other events of an emergency nature requiring that the student be absent from campus. A student is responsible for notifying the instructor in writing when an exception is desired. III. REQUIREMENTS A. Reading and Research Report (10 points):
Readings are to be completed prior to the class session for which they are assigned (Tuesday of each week of class) and initial work on the “Communicable Diseases” form should be done. An Introduction to Community Health (4 th^ ed.). Boston: Jones and Bartlett. The Reading and Research Report is due _______________________. B. Annotated Bibliography (20 points): Choose an area of personal interest in public health and nutrition. Develop an annotated bibliography of five references from the professional literature (journals, research reports, books) and five additional references from popular literature (newspapers, magazine, brochures) which address this issue. The use of articles obtained via Internet searches is encouraged. The annotations should each be approximately 150 words, clearly and concisely written, typed, and consistently formatted. At least five should be no more than four years old. The annotations should have both descriptive (what it covers) and analytic components (its meaning and importance). This assignment is due ____________. C. Public Health and Nutrition Issue Paper (30 points): Write a paper of 1000-1500 words (4-6 pages) on the area of interest for which you did the annotated bibliography. Discuss the nature of the issue, its importance in terms of public health (i.e. the scope of the problem, those affected, the impact on society), and strategies for responding to it. Materials from the annotated bibliography should be incorporated and references must be cited. Pre-nursing students are encouraged to do a nutrition paper. Students enrolled for graduate credit must do a 2000 word paper and meet with the instructor during office hours to discuss your paper. The paper is due _____________. D.
