Psychology Chapter 2: The Nervous System and the Endocrine System
Spinal reflexes require input from: - The Spinal cord
The _____ gland triggers ovaries and testes to release sex hormones. - Pituitary
The peripheral nervous system includes _____ that carry/carries messages from the body to the central
nervous system. - Sensory neurons
Dr. Paivio studies the ways in which the endocrine system and the nervous system are similar. What
might he conclude? - Both systems secrete molecules that activate receptors elsewhere.
An automatic reflex, such as a knee jerk or withdrawing a hand from a flame, involves: - The spinal cord
Samantha has just given birth to her first baby and has started breastfeeding. Samantha has her _____
gland to thank for producing prolactin and oxytocin to stimulate her milk production and the let-down
reflex. - Pituitary gland
After a police car with flashing lights and a blaring siren passes him and pulls over another driver for
speeding, Jerry's heartbeat soon slows down, his blood pressure decreases, and he stops sweating so
much. These calming physical reactions are MOST directly regulated by his: - parasympathetic nervous
system.
Nervous System - The primary internal communication network of the body; divided into the central
nervous system and the peripheral nervous system
Nerves - Bundles of neuron axons that carry information in the peripheral nervous system
Central Nervous System (CNS) - The division of the nervous system that consist of the brain and spinal
cord
Spinal reflexes - Simple, auotmatic behaviors that are processed in the spinal cord

Spinal reflexes require input from: - The Spinal cord The _____ gland triggers ovaries and testes to release sex hormones. - Pituitary The peripheral nervous system includes _____ that carry/carries messages from the body to the central nervous system. - Sensory neurons Dr. Paivio studies the ways in which the endocrine system and the nervous system are similar. What might he conclude? - Both systems secrete molecules that activate receptors elsewhere. An automatic reflex, such as a knee jerk or withdrawing a hand from a flame, involves: - The spinal cord Samantha has just given birth to her first baby and has started breastfeeding. Samantha has her _____ gland to thank for producing prolactin and oxytocin to stimulate her milk production and the let-down reflex. - Pituitary gland After a police car with flashing lights and a blaring siren passes him and pulls over another driver for speeding, Jerry's heartbeat soon slows down, his blood pressure decreases, and he stops sweating so much. These calming physical reactions are MOST directly regulated by his: - parasympathetic nervous system. Nervous System - The primary internal communication network of the body; divided into the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system Nerves - Bundles of neuron axons that carry information in the peripheral nervous system Central Nervous System (CNS) - The division of the nervous system that consist of the brain and spinal cord Spinal reflexes - Simple, auotmatic behaviors that are processed in the spinal cord

Peripheral nervous system - Includes all the nerves lying outside the central nervous system Somatic nervous system - Communicates sensory information to the CNS and carries motor messages from the CNS to the muscles (subdivision of the peripheral nervous system) Autonomic nervous system - The subdivision off the peripheral nervous system that regulates involuntary functions Sympathetic nervous system - Produces rapid physical arousal in repose to perceived emergencies or threats Parasympathetic nervous system - Maintains normal bodily functions and conserves the body's physical resources. Endocrine System - The system of glands located throughout the body, that secrete hormones into the bloodstream Hormones - Chemical messengers secreted into the bloodstream primarily by endocrine glands Pituitary Gland - The endocrine gland attached to the base of the brain that secretes hormones affecting the function of other glands as well as hormones that act directly on physical processes. Oxytocin - Hormone involved in reproduction, social motivation, and social behavior. Adrenal glands - The pair of endocrine glands that are involved in the human stress response. Adrenal Cortex - The outer portion of the adrenal glands Adrenal medulla - The inner portion of the adrenal glands, which secretes epinephrine and nor- epinephrine.
