z INTRODUCTION Adoption refers to the method which creates a parent-child relation between people who are not associated by blood. The adopted baby is privileged with all the rights which should be entitled to the biological infant of the adopted parents. Adoption-by-legal course ensures irreversible rights to each adoptive parents. In India there are 3 such legislations.
- The Hindu Adoption and Maintenance Act of 1956.
- The Guardians and Wards Act of 1890.
- The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act of 2000
EMOTIONAL ADJUSTEMENT
According to “American Psychological Association” Emotional Adjustment refers to the condition or process of personal acceptance of adaption to one’s circumstances, which may require modification of attitude and the expression of emotions that are appropriate to a given situation.
- (^) CHARACTERISTICS OF WELL ADJUSTED PERSON. I. Aware of his own strength and weakness. II. Satisfaction of basic needs. III. Flexibility in behaviors. IV. The ability to tackle adverse circumstances. V. Respecting oneself and others. VI. Adequate level of aspiration.
- (^) CHARACTERISTICS OF MALADAPTIVE PERSON I. Withdrawal and timid. II. Anxious. III. Shy and self conscious. IV. Extremely aggressive. V. Isolated. VI. Emotionally disturbed.
z (^) REVIEW OF LITREATURE
- (^) Biswas (2019) did a descriptive study on infertile couples to understand the attitude and knowledge of adoption. Total of 200 samples were chosen for the study. Self structured socio demographic Performa knowledge questionnaire, attitude Likert scale was used to assess the same. The results showed that 63% husband and 53% wife have less knowledge about adoption and 84% husband and 82% wife had neutral attitude towards child adoption. A positive correlation was seen between the knowledge and attitude of adoption among them.
- (^) Mohanty (2013) conducted a research to understand the factors that lead to attitude formation or change towards the adoption. 1, samples were interviewed. The results show that majority of the people accepted adoption as a family form. The positive attitude towards adoption were more likely because of the factors like infertility, approval of adoption and familiarity of adoption. Negative attitude was among the people who had a strong belief in blood-ties and concerns about
z CONCLUSION
RELATED TO ATTITUDE TO ADOPTION –
- (^) The majority of studies has concluded that the practice of adoption is seen as a positive act. Majority women and infertile couples prefer adoption. Both neutral and negative attitude was also seen amongst people who believe in blood relations ideology. A positive correlation was noticed, people who had higher level of knowledge and idea of adoption were more likely to adopt in their later lives as compared to people who had less knowledge.
- (^) The basic reason for adopting a child maybe infertility or the idea of providing a shelter to the homeless child with care and affection. Nowadays more and more people are getting the idea of adoption and started accepting it as a moral practice.
z (^) CONCLUSION
RELATED TO EMOTIONAL ADJUSTEMENT OF ADOPTEES –
- (^) Most of the studies provided us with positive response. Majority of the adoptees had been adjusted to their new homes and families. Adoptees who had been emotionally adjusted to their homes had also excelled in academics. It was also seen that girls were more emotionally adjusted than boys.
- (^) Adoptees who came to know about their adoption late were less emotionally adjusted than those who knew about it in their early stage.
- (^) The basic reason for having positive emotional adjustment has many reasons, one of them were secure attachment found between mother and the child.
