Short essay questions should be answered in full sentences. What are Primary Circular Reactions, according to Piaget? Be sure to describe this in sufficient detail. Also, what specific behaviors can be observed during this substage? Your Answer: Primary Circular Reactions: This is the second sensorimotor substage of development in the infant. According to Piaget, this stage is where the first habits are formed. This is when the infant repeats intentionally, the behavior he had discovered by mistake during the simple reflex stage then he voluntarily countinues in that behavior espesially because he derives pleasure from it. It is usually self focused. For instance, If the infants fingers mistakenly gets to his face and he is able to suck it, it becomes a repetitive behavior and he starts sucking his fingers vouluntarily as an habit.

Question 14 10 /^10 pts

Assimilation and accommodation helps us understand what schemas are, how individuals especially children organise and improve in their thoughts in a way that it fits their new experiences as they interact with the world. Assimilation is adding knowledge to the exsiting schema that is present. It can be seen as learning and build on esxisting schemas unlike Accommodation is changing the whole schema itself when faced with a new situation especially when the knowledge is irrelevant to the new experience. For example, in riding a bicycle and a bike. They are a bit similar but to ride a bike, lets say a power bike you have to learn that you need to be more careful with the speed of a power bike and be able to control it better, and that its not a smechanical as riding a bicycle. Additional knowledge of riding a bike from a bicycle can be seen as assimilation adding knowledge to previous one. An example for accommodation is knowing how to ride a bike compared to flying an aeroplane. You have to be able to change the initial idea you have of riding a bike to be able fly a plane. You have to accomodate the new knowledge to be able to do this. You cannot use the knowledge of riding a bike to fly a plane its a whole new schema needed. A personal example of assimilation for me would be when I learning how to cook white rice versus spicey rice. As a teenager, I already had the knowledge to make plain white rice without adding peppers and tomatoes. It was easy to add to that knowledge of cooking white rice only that I needed now to grind peppers and tomatoes to add to it. I learnt something new about making rice that I initially did not know but I did not need to change everything I initially knew about making plain white rice. For accommodation, I used to love riding bikes a lot as a child and teeneager. When I was old enough to ride a car I had to practically go to a driving school to learn everything about it. It was nothing like driving a car. I had to completely learn a new schema for driving a car. I had to accommodate a new learning/knowledge.
