VC 151 :: Week 01 1 of 2 07 January 2009
— Vocabulary Flashcards Project —
project::vocab flashcards
Assignment ::
Research, design and produce a set of flashcards for the provided list of vocabulary words.
These cards are divided into sets, with the completed project due on Wednesday of Week
10. It will be your responsibility to research and write the definitions for the words, citing
multiple sources in each set, print and trim the cards, and finally design and produce a
small box to hold the flashcards.
Process ::
The list of vocabulary words is divided into five sets, with one set due about every two
weeks. For each word on the list, you must write a thorough definition for the word. The
definitions may come from many difference sources, including class handouts, the Graphic
Print Production textbook or other graphic design text, or through Internet research. Some
of the words on the list have multiple definitions—be sure to select the one that relates to
print production and graphic design (For example, alias should not be defined as a TV show
that aired on ABC from 2001–2006).
Before you begin production of your flashcards, create a vocabulary list that contains the
vocabulary term, the set number it belongs to, your definition, and your citation(s). This can
be done in Microsoft Excel, Word or InDesign (using tables), or other appropriate software
application. Print this list to turn in at the due date for each set. You should create a list for
each set prior to executing the layout of the cards in InDesign
For each definition you must cite your source. These citations must be included with your
definition (though not on the printed flashcard). In addition to the course textbook and in-
class handouts, you must cite from at least five additional sources within each vocabulary
set, of which three must be printed sources (this is in addition to the course textbook).
When you use Web citations, be sure that the site you choose is a credible source for print
production information. Do not simply use the first site that appears in a Google search.
Book citations should follow this format:
McCue, Claudia.
Real World Print Publishing.
Peachpit Press, pg. 45
Internet citations should follow this format:
Wikipedia
. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyan
Design ::
For the flashcards themselves, a basic InDesign template with a 10-up layout on 11x17 stock
is provided. This template defines the physical size of the cards (5" wide by 3" tall) as well as
the layout necessary for printing double-sided on glossy cardstock on the VC Color Printer
with less-than-perfect front-to-back registration.
You have full creative control over the design of the cards, and the artwork can be done in
Photoshop, Illustrator, or both. Each card should use the exact same design, with only the
content changing. In general, the term should appear by itself on one side, and the
definition on the other. Be sure to plan for long definitions—the length of each one will vary
quite a bit. (One typography hint: Disable hyphenation for both the terms and definitions).
You are free to alter and improve your design as the project progresses, though you will
need to re-print cards that use an older design before you hand in the finished project. At
the end of the project, you will design, print and produce a small box to hold the complete
set of cards. An Illustrator template will be provided later in the quarter.
