A design plan for an interactive kiosk station in the atrium of cañada college's new student center. The project aims to provide visitors with quick and easy access to campus information in both english and spanish through a touch-screen interface. The target audience includes students, staff, and visitors with varying levels of tech comfort and english proficiency. The kiosk will offer features such as a campus map, student services and administrative office locations, news and events, a college history photo gallery, and a welcome message from the college president.

Concept Introduction Cañada College is part of the San Mateo Community College District in Northern California (just south of San Francisco). The college is a Hispanic Serving Institution, which means that great part of its population are Spanish speakers. Recently the SMCCD passed a bond allocated funds to all three colleges to build new facilities and revamp the old ones. Cañada College is using the bond money to build a new Student Center which will include: library, student union, administrative offices, art gallery, student services, conference rooms and other miscellaneous multi- purpose areas. One of the main purposes of this new structure is to serve as a main entrance for the campus from the parking lots. Course Name: ITGM-723 Human-Centered Interactive Design Spring 07 Project Title: Informational Kiosk for Cañada College Student Center Atrium Student Name: Daniela Castillo Professor: Andrew Thomas Hieronymi
Most visitors will enter the grounds through the new and stylish top-level entrance and descend to a main atrium area. In addition to detailed signage, it would be helpful to add an bilingual (English/Spanish) interactive kiosk station in this atrium that will contain the following information:
Department. His granddaughter is playing one of the lead parts. He lives at a retirement community just down the hill and he took the bus up to school. It’s his first time on campus and he is trying to find the Box Office and Main Theatre. He is also interested in perhaps finding out more about art classes offered at the campus because he wants to learn how to paint with watercolors. He has an older computer his son gave him so he could have email and download photos from his digital camera. He is not incredibly comfortable with technology but is familiar with ATM machines and is not necessarily intimidated by an interactive kiosk. Name: Barbara Todd Age: 35 Occupation: Manager at a local printing company Income Level: $65, Education Level: BA Personal Background Information: Barbara Todd is at Cañada because she heard that it has a very good MBA program offered on campus through San Francisco State University. It’s very convenient for her because it’s designed for working adults and the location is convenient. She’s on campus to meet with the Dean of the University Center that is in charge of the MBA program. She’s familiar with computers as she uses them continuously at her job, and has no problem with technology. Name: Maria Elena Guerrero Age: 42 Occupation: Home keeper Income Level: $25,000/yr Education Level: High school in a foreign country Personal Background Information: Maria Elena is at Cañada to talk to a counselor about the ECE (Early Childhood Education) program. She wants to get an Associate Degree so she can get a job at a local daycare school. Her English level is decent but she still has trouble with some concepts. She has only used computers a couple times and with help from somebody to perform some tasks such as filling out an immigration form or find information about a baby gift registry at Target. She is very intimidated by technology in general but there is a possibility that when she arrives at the campus there is no employee nearby to answer her questions in person and she is required to visit the kiosk. Reason for Using the Product: Visitors to the campus will have quick and easy access to basic information about where they need to go and how to get there both in
English and Spanish. The kiosk will also provide some simple information regarding the background and history of the campus for those interested. The kiosk will have a detailed interactive campus map that will help users assess their location and their destination, as well as the general layout of the campus. An interactive map allows for richer layers of complexity that a printed 2D flat map doesn’t in terms of meta-information offered by selecting different areas and it can show dynamic three-dimensional information for buildings with multiple levels. In addition, a touch-screen interface combined with carefully planned user-centered information access and flow will allow users to view and utilize information quickly and without the need of a constantly-manned information station near the entrance of the campus. Visitors can have a self-serve approach to their informational and geographical needs within the campus at any time.
