Pre-Lecture Assignment Chapter 1
Skills and Knowledge you should have from General Chemistry: Know the structure of an atom. Know and be able to write ions, and isotopes. Be able to write the electron configuration of the first ten elements. Know how the periodic table is organized and what information you can obtain from it. Be able to determine the number of valence electrons for elements. Explain the formation of a covalent bond and know the difference between ionic and covalent bonding. Determine the polarity of a bond. Know trends in length and strength of bonds. Be able to draw Lewis structures, predict the molecular geometry around each central atom as well as the bond angles, and determine the overall polarity of the molecule. Know what resonance structures are and how to draw them. Know what an isomer is and how to draw them. Be able to assign formal charges to all atoms in a molecule. Be able to describe atomic orbitals. Describe the formation of molecular orbitals Describe the formation of hybridized atomic orbitals, and be able to determine hybridization of an atom Calculate the number of sigma and pi bonds in a molecule Identify different types of intermolecular forces (IMF) Describe the effect of IMF on boiling and melting points Describe the effect of IMF on solubility
Learning Objectives for Chapter 1 Understand curved arrow notation. Be able to predict major and minor resonance contributors. Be able to define and draw constitutional isomers. Understand how to represent the 3-D structure of an organic molecule (wedge/dash) Be able to draw simplified structures of organic molecules (condensed and skeletal).
