1. Answer both parts
A) In an electrophoretic study of enzyme variation in a species of grasshopper, you find 62
A1A1, 49 A1A2 and 9 A2A2 individuals in a sample of 120. Show that p=0.72 and q=0.28, and
that the genotype frequencies of A1A1, A1A2 and A2A2 are approximately 0.51, 0.41 and 0.08
respectively. Demonstrate that the genotype frequencies are in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.
B) List the assumptions of the Hardy-Weinberg Law and briefly describe how they are often
violated in nature.

  1. Write an essay on the applications of molecular phylogenetics in zoology.
  2. “I look on the term species as one arbitrarily given for the sake of convenience to a set of individuals closely resembling each other. It does not differ essentially from the term variety which is given to less distinct and more fluctuating forms” Darwin 1859. Discuss.
  3. Describe the three types of postnatal growth disorders.
  4. Which stage in early embryogenesis is unusual in Hydractinia in comparison to other animals, and in what way?
  5. What would you expect to happen if one transplanted the Spemann’s organizer from a wild-type frog embryo to an ectopic site in another embryo? Explain your answer.
  6. Outline the division of signalling mechanisms in animal development into short, medium and long range; and discuss any ONE of these in detail.
  7. “New evo-devo approaches have taught us much about animal eyes”. Discuss.
